Thought the Amazon's boiling river was bizarre? Nature's other surreal spectacles include flowering deserts and rainbow trees

  • Geoscientist Andrés Ruzo found a river in the Amazon that boils victims alive, due to being heated by hot springs
  • In Hawaii, there are kaleidoscope-coloured trees with bark that look like works of art created by a talented painter
  • From Red Sprites in the sky to methane bubbles under a lake, here are some of earth's more spectacular processes

Underwater Vortex off the coast of Mauritius 몰리셔스 해안의 수중 소용돌이

Earlier this week geoscientist Andrés Ruzo revealed that he'd found a four-mile long river in the Amazon so hot it boils.

But it's far from the only bizarre natural phenomenon Mother Nature has up her sleeve.

Other incredible treasures planet Earth offers include underwater vortexes and an island dominated by 43million crabs.

And in Hawaii, there are kaleidoscope-coloured trees that look like works of art.

The spectacular effect is created when 'rainbow' eucalyptus trees shed their bark revealing green, orange and purple splashes beneath.

Here MailOnline Travel shares some of the most stunning and unusual natural phenomena that occur around the world.

Red Sprites 우주 섬광

For decades, airline pilots were the only people lucky enough to catch sight of an incredible natural phenomenon known as red sprites. These rare burst of light last for just a few milliseconds and take place more than 50 miles (80 km) above the ground during a thunderstorm

Boiling river in Mayantuyacu, Amazon 페루 마양투야쿠의 끓어오르는 강

Deep in the heart of the Amazon there is a legendary four-mile-long river that boils its victims alive. This is due to fault-fed hot springs. When rain falls on the surrounding area, it gathers into the porous sedimentary rock. As it move through the rock, it heats up from the primal heat of the Earth. Eventually, it comes across a large thrust fault, or crack. As water falls behind it, it forces the now heated water to ascend along the fault-line to surface as a hot or warm spring

Hole-punch clouds 뚫은 듯한 특이한 홀펀치구름

The heaven's are open: Experts call stunning cloud formations hole-punch clouds or fallstreak holes. They are caused when temperatures are below freezing, but water droplets in the clouds have yet to freeze due to a lack of ice particles. When ice particles form quickly, it causes a domino effect as the water droplets connect with the crystals, which get heavier and then start to fall all of a sudden - leaving a large hole in the cloud

Richat Structure, Mauritania

It looks like beautiful abstract splashes of colour not to dissimilar to work by Van Gogh but this vivid picture is a reality in the Sahara desert. Over time, desert weather has caused the Richat Structure to gradually shed layers, resulting in the structure's remarkable flatness
