   "사우디 정부는 증가하는 전력 수요에 대처하기 위해 장래 10년간 전력 프로젝트에 1,333억불이 소요될 것으로 예상하고 있다"고 압둘라 알 후사엔 사우디 수전력 장관이 밝혔다.

또한  압둘라 알 후사엔 장관은 2022년 피크 전력량이 9만 메가와트에 이를 것으로 예상하고 있으며. 현재 가용 전력량은 7만 메가와트 수준이라고 언론을 통해 언급했다.

사우디 최대 전력회사인 SEC도 2015년 8월에 최대의 피크 전력부하량을 기록했다고 말했다.

작년 여름은 엘리뇨 현상때문에 전세계적으로 유난히 더워 전력부하량이 56,547 메가와트에서 62,260 MW로 1년 일찍 10.2%나 증가했다.

사우디 정부는 향후 10년간 1,333억불이 소요될 것으로 보고 적극적인 민자자본의 참여를 유도할 계획으로 있으며 올해 중반 이집트 정부와 양국을 연결하는 전력그리드사업 계약을 체결할 예정이다.

2019년 완전 가동을 목표로 하고 있다.

Saudi Arabia will require up to $133.3bn (SAR500bn) to fund its electricity projects over the next 10 years as it seeks to cope with increasing demand for power, the Kingdom's electricity and water minister said. 

Abdullah al-Hussayen reportedly said the country expects peak electricity to hit 90,000 megawatts (MW) in 2022.

The country's current installed capacity stands at 70,000 MW. 

Saudi Electricity (SEC), the largest power producer in the country, said peak electricity load hit its highest level ever in August 2015.

This was driven by local demand for power during the summer.

SEC's peak load rose by 10.2% to 62,260 MW from 56,547 MW a year earlier.

According to Reuters, Hussayen said: "The expansion plan in the sector...requires the execution of electricity projects for the next ten years whose costs will exceed $133.3bn and in which the private sector is expected to take part.

Hussayen said contracts to build an electricity grid to connect Saudi Arabia and Egypt would be signed before mid-2016, and the project would operate at full capacity before mid-2019.

The project aims to allow power trading between the two countries.

Peak-time summer power consumption in Saudi Arabia falls between noon and mid afternoon, when air conditioners are used most intensively, while in Egypt the peak is after sunset.

Deputy oil minister for Saudi Arabia, Prince Abdulaziz Bin Salman, said Saudi energy consumption was expected to grow by 4% to 5% annually in the next few years, reaching double its current level by 2030 if no efficiency measures are taken.
