일본이 인도 고속철 수주에 이어 중남미 파나마에서 모노레일 건설공사를 수주했다.
요미우리신문은 15일 파나마 정부가 도시철도에 일본식 모노레일을 도입할 예정이라면서 이 같이 보도했다.
이 신문에 따르면 일본과 파나마 정부는 최근 파나마에 모노레일을 건설한다는 내용의 각서를 교환했다.
일본 정부는 일본기업의 수주를 전제로 엔차관을 통한 자금 제공을 검토하고 있다. 수주를 노리는 업체는 히타치제작소와 미쓰비시상사 등이다.
모노레일은 파나마 운하를 가로질러 전장 약 26km의 시가지에 설치될 예정이며 이르면 내년 착공이 시작된다. 사업 규모는 약 20억 달러(약 2조4144억원)다.
일본은 지난해 12월 인도에 신칸센을 수출한 데 이어 파나마에 모노레일을 수출하면서 정부가 추진 중인 인프라 수출 전략에 탄력이 붙을 전망이다.
중미 카리브 지역에서 모노레일이 도입되는 건 이번이 처음이다.
요미우리 신문은 파나마에 대해 "도시화가 진행되면서 만성적인 교통정체가 심화돼 철도 건설의 필요성이 높아지고 있다"고 설명했다.
파나마 정부는 모노레일이 지하철보다 건설비용이 저렴하고 일본에서 안정적으로 운행되고 있다는 점 등을 높게 평가했다고 이 신문은 덧붙였다.
앞서 일본 정부는 지난달 8일 인도 정부와 뭄바이와 아메다바드를 연결하는 인도 최초의 고속철을 일본의 신칸센 방식으로 건설하기로 합의했다.
총 사업비는 약 9800억 루피(약 1 조8000억엔, 약 17조1206억원)로 일본 정부는 이 가운데 1조엔의 차관을 10년에 걸쳐 인도에 공여할 방침이다.

Japan and Panama will sign a memorandum of understanding on Thursday to use Japanese technology for an estimated $2 billion monorail that would span the Central American nation’s trans-oceanic canal and ease traffic congestion.
The pact includes financing via the government-backed Japan Bank for International Cooperation, though lending terms haven’t yet been set, Luis Miguel Hincapie, Panama’s vice minister of foreign affairs, said on Thursday in an interview in Tokyo.
The project, which could start as early as this year and be completed by 2022, would be the largest Japan-sourced infrastructure investment in Panama’s history.
The 27-kilometer project, Central America’s first monorail, can help expand business ties with Japan, part of a broader goal to draw more investment to Panama, Hincapie said.
Japanese industrial group Hitachi is “highly interested” in the project and participated in a feasibility study, said spokesman Kazuki Fujiwara.
Mitsubishi is also considering vying for the business, said spokesman Koichi Funabashi.
“This is the start of a new era of cooperation with Japan, and is very important for Panama,” Hincapie said.
Panamanian president Juan Carlos Verela plans to visit Japan in April to sign a final agreement on the monorail project.
The new line would transport commuters from the suburbs of Panama City to the city centre in 45 minutes, a trip that now can take three hours by car because of traffic jams.
