   역대 최고 당첨금이 걸려 미국 전역에 '로또 광풍'을 몰고 온 파워볼 복권의 당첨자가 드디어 나왔다.

13일(현지시간) ABC 뉴스와 AP통신 등에 따르면 이날 추첨한 로또 복권 파워볼의 1등 당첨 복권이 캘리포니아 주에서 팔렸다.

캘리포니아 주 복권 당국은 트위터를 통해 대박 행운을 거머쥔 1등 당첨 복권이 치노힐스 시의 편의점 세븐일레븐에서 팔렸다고 밝혔다.

치노힐스 시는 최근 총기 난사 사건으로 얼룩졌던 로스앤젤레스(LA) 동부 샌버너디노 카운티에 있는 도시다.

이번 추첨에서 1등 당첨금은 15억 8천600억 달러(약 1조 9천255억 원·세전)로 미국 로또 복권 사상 역대 최고 금액이다.

초대박 주인공의 신원은 아직 알려지지 않았다.

캘리포니아주 복권 당국은 "다른 주에서도 1등 당첨자가 나왔는지 지켜보고 있다"고 설명했다.

매주 수요일과 토요일 두 번 추첨하는 파워볼은 지난해 11월 4일이래 지난주 토요일까지 계속 1등 당첨자를 내지 못했다.

당시 4천만 달러(약 479억원) 수준이었던 당첨금은 계속 이월되면서 눈덩이처럼 불어났다.

미국뿐 아니라 미국과 국경을 맞댄 캐나다 시민들도 '로또 대박'을 노리고 건너오면서 1등 당첨금은 16억 달러에 육박했다.

지금까지 미국 내 로또 당첨금 최고액은 2012년 3월 '메가 밀리언스'에서 나온 6억5천600만 달러(약 7천965억원)다. 이 복권은 파워볼과 전미 복권에서 쌍벽을 이룬다.

파워볼 1등 당첨자는 당첨금을 29년간 연금으로 나눠 받거나 현금으로 한꺼번에 받을 수 있다. 다만 일시불로 받으면 당첨금은 좀 낮아져 이번 추첨에서는 9억3천만 달러(1조 1천291억 원·세전)를 받을 수 있다.

NBC 뉴스는 현금으로 일시 수령 시 세금을 제하고 실제로 손에 쥐는 돈은 5억 6천만 달러(약 6천800억 원)가 된다고 설명했다.

파워볼은 미국 44개 주와 워싱턴D.C, 미국령 지역 2곳(푸에르토리코·버진아일랜드) 등 모두 47개 지역에서 발행된다.

1∼69 숫자 가운데 5개와 1∼26 가운데 나오는 파워볼 숫자 등 모두 6개의 숫자가 일치해야 1등의 행운을 누릴 수 있다.

1등 당첨 확률은 2억 9천220만 분의 1이다. 이번 추첨일의 경우 전체 숫자 조합의 85.8%에 해당하는 조합이 팔려나갔다고 복권 당국은 설명했다.

A handful of people's nights just got a whole lot better. 

Winning jackpot tickets in Wednesday's monster $1.5 billion Powerball drawing were sold in three states, California, Florida and Tennessee, according to California Lottery Deputy Director of Communications Russ Lopez. 

One winning ticket was sold at a 7-Eleven in Chino Hills, California, in San Bernardino County, east of Los Angeles, officials said.

Details about where the winning tickets were sold in Florida and Tennessee were not yet known. Powerball is played in 44 states as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. 

The winning numbers were 4, 8, 19. 27, 34, with a Powerball of 10. The multiplier was 2X

It was the first time that all a ticket matching all five numbers and the Powerball number had been sold since the jackpot began at $40 million on Nov. 7. 

With no winner, the pot rolled over again and again — 20 times in all, swelling to $500 million last week and then $900 million in Saturday's drawing, and then to $1.586 billion. 

The jackpot is the largest in history. The odds of winning the jackpot were 1 in 292.2 million. 

After the winning Southern California ticket was announced, local TV helicopters captured images of a large crowd of people gathering at the 7-Eleven. Crowds were seen chanting "Chino Hills! Chino Hills!" 

California also had 12 tickets match 5 of the 6 numbers, the lottery commission said. 

Matching five numbers, but not the Powerball number, can carry a $1 million prize, according to Powerball, but the California Lottery said the amounts won on those tickets was not immediately known late Wednesday. 

National Powerball sales Tuesday were more than $326 million and sales nationwide on Wednesday were expected to reach $600 million, Gary Grief, executive director of the Texas Lottery Commission and chief of the Powerball Game said earlier Wednesday. 

Wednesday's huge jackpot surpassed the previous Powerball record of $590.5 million, which was won in Florida on May 18, 2013. 

Chino Hills is a city of around 77,000 about 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
