여행 가방과 전동 스쿠터와의 기능을 가진 아이디어 상품이 나온다. 시카고 사업가 '케븐 오도넬'이 모터사이클 전문가 '보이드 브루너'와 개발한 모도백'(Modobag) 오도넬은 현재 온라인 기금모금 서비스 '킥스타터'(kickstarter)를 통해 투자를 유치하고 있다. 그는 오는 10월 2일까지 16만 달러(약 2억 원)를 모으는 것이 목표다. 모도백 사이즈는 가로 56cm·세로 36cm·폭 23cm·용량 34.5리터로 미국 연방항공국의 기내 반입 표준 사이즈에 부합한다. 가방 측면에 운전대 기능을 하는 손잡이가 달렸고, 그 위에 조종장치가 세팅돼 있으며, 발판도 있다. 속도는 체중 80kg인 사람 탑승 기준 시속 13km까지 낼 수 있고, 기능을 강화한 '모도백 맥스'는 체중 118kg까지 탑승 가능하다. 리듐이온 건전지가 장착돼 있어 한번 충전(3시간 소요)으로 8km까지 이동할 수 있다. 개인용 전자제품을 담을 수 있도록 고안한 주머니와 듀얼 USB포트, 분실 시 위치를 추적할 수 있는 GPS 시스템도 갖췄다. 소비자 가격은 일반 1천899달러(약 125만 원), '모도백 맥스' 2천199달러(260만 원)로 책정될 예정이며 현재 999달러와 1천299달러에 사전 예약을 받고 있다. 오도넬은 "기금모금이 성공적으로 완료되면 내년 2월부터 배송이 가능하다"고 덧붙였다. Luggage you can ride? That's the idea behind Kevin O'Donnell's Modobag.
The Chicago entrepreneur says he came up with the concept a few years ago when he paid the airfare for a local break-dancing team to attend a competition. “As we were running around through the airport, the boys were taking turns riding on my luggage,” he recalls. “I told them we were going to put motors on these.”
O'Donnell spent a year designing the Modobag—a carry-on suitcase with electric-powered wheels, a steering column and thumb-action throttle—with competitive motorcyclist and motorcycle technician Boyd Bruner. “It's a microvehicle,” O'Donnell says. “The most comparable thing to it would be electric skateboards and scooters. It's super-functional, but also fun.” He's trying to raise $160,000 by Oct. 2 through a Kickstarter campaign, which has $9,000 in pledges so far. A Modobag (available for a $999 pledge, with an expected retail price of $1899.99) can carry riders who weigh up to 200 pounds. Fully charged, it has a 5-mile range when it's carrying a passenger who weighs 180 pounds, and it goes up to 8 mph. A sturdier model called the Modobag Max ($1,299 pledge, expected retail price $2199.99) can handle riders up to 260 pounds. It's 9 by 14 by 22 inches, so it meets Federal Aviation Administration standards for carry-on luggage. And it includes USB ports for charging electronic devices. “You also have a GPS tracker, so you'll never lose your luggage again,” O'Donnell says.
If the campaign is successful, the company expects to ship Modobags in February.
