나렌드라 모디 인도 총리가 인도 의회 야당 의원 샤시 타루르에게 지원을 피력했다. 타루르는 얼마전 옥스퍼드 대학 연설에서 영국이 식민 지배 200년에 대해 인도에 배상금을 지불해야 한다고 말했다. 나렌드라 모디 인도 총리는 인도 의회에서 «타루르가 연설한 내용은 인도인들의 애국심을 자극했으며 우리가 적절한 장소에서 적절한 것을 말할 수 있다는 인상을 심어주었다»고 밝혔다. 정치인이자 유명한 작가인 샤시 타루르는 옥스퍼드 대학 연설에서 영국이 인도에게 배상금을 줘야 한다는 내용의 연설을 했으며, 그 후 유튜브에 공개되어 50만 건 이상의 조회수를 얻었다 자신의 연설에서 타루르는 영국 식민주의자들이 인도에 끼친 고통 및 영국이 취한 이득을 매우 선명하고 다채롭게 얘기했다. 그는 주로 영국이 들어오기 전 인도의 세계 경제 점유율이 27%였으나, 영국이 떠나간 후 그 수치가 4%로 줄었다는 점을 지적했다. 타루르는 «지금 필요한 것은 영국이 이 사실을 인정하고 손해 배상을 해야 한다»고 밝혔다. 정확한 배상액에 대해서는 얘기된바 없지만 사전 평가에 따르면 3조에 달할 것으로 보인다. 나렌드라 모디 인도 총리는 올해 안으로 영국을 방문할 계획이다. 회담 과정에서 배상에 대한 얘기가 이루어질 지 현재로선 알 수 없다. 영국의 공식 반응도 아직 접수된 바가 없다. sputniknews.com |

The Prime Minister was speaking at the inauguration of Speaker's Research Initiative for Parliamentarians at the Parliament House complex in New Delhi.
A day after he got a reprimand from his party chief Sonia Gandhi, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor received handsome praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his debating skills, creating flutters in political circles about the timing of his remarks.
"What Shashi ji said (at the Oxford debate recently) has now gone viral on Youtube," he said praising the passionate argument in Oxford put forward by Tharoor in demanding reparation payments from the UK to India for 200 years of its colonial rule.
Tharoor's speech gelled with the feelings of patriotic Indians on the issue and also shows what impression one can leave with effective arguments by saying the right things at the right place, Modi said.

Seated in the front row, Tharoor, who was pulled up by Gandhi on Wednesday for leaking his remarks against Congress' stalling tactics in Parliament on the issue of scams, acknowledged the Prime Minister's praise for him with a smile.
The Congress MP was among the few non-BJP MPs present in the gathering that included veteran Parliamentarian L K Advani, ministers and MPs belonging to BJP and its allies. Tharoor had found himself in problems over his praise of Modi on a few occasions ever since he came to power last year and attracted criticism within the party for that.
He had accepted the Prime Minister's invitation to join the 'Clean India' campaign and had recently praised Modi's campaign on yoga and had also remarked that the Prime Minister leaves a positive impact on the countries he visits though he follows the UPA policies.
