인간이 사는 데 적합한 환경을 지녔을 개연성이 있는 '또 다른 지구'가 태양계 밖에서 최초로 발견됐다. 미국 항공우주국(NASA)은 백조자리에서 지구로부터 약 1천400 광년 떨어진 행성 '케플러-452b'를 발견했다고 23일 밝혔다. 지구 크기의 1.6배인 이 행성은 태양과 같은 'G2'형의 항성 주위를 돌고 있으며, 이 행성의 궤도는 액체 상태의 물이 표면에 존재할 수 있는 이 항성계 내의 '거주 가능 구역'에 있다. 이런 조건을 만족하며 지구 크기와 비슷한 외계 행성이 발견된 것은 이번이 처음이다. 케플러 452-b는 또 지금까지 발견된 '거주 가능 구역' 행성들 중 가장 크기가 작다. NASA 과학 미션국 부국장 존 그런스펠드는 "다른 항성들이 행성을 갖고 있다는 사실을 발견한 지 20년이 되는 해에 케플러 외계행성 계획이 지구와 우리 태양을 가장 닮은 행성과 항상을 발견했다"고 설명했다. 그는 "이 흥분되는 결과는 우리가 지구 2.0을 찾는 데 한 걸음 더 다가가도록 해 주는 것"이라고 평가했다. 케플러-452b의 발견으로 지금까지 발견된 행성의 수는 1천30개가 됐다. NASA may announce the discovery of a new Earth-like body by its planet-hunting Kepler Space Telescope at a press conference tomorrow.
“The first exoplanet orbiting another star like our sun was discovered in 1995. Exoplanets, especially small Earth-size worlds, belonged within the realm of science fiction just 21 years ago,” a prepared statement reads. “Today, and thousands of discoveries later, astronomers are on the cusp of finding something people have dreamed about for thousands of years -- another Earth.”
NASA's teleconference to announce the new discoveries made by Kepler kicks off at 9:00 a.m. PDT / 12:00 p.m. EDT on July 23.
Briefing participants include John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Jon Jenkins, Kepler data analysis lead, Jeff Coughlin, Kepler research scientist at SETI Institute and Didier Queloz, professor of astrophysics at Cambridge University.
To date, astronomers have confirmed about 1,000 Earth-size planets orbiting around stars in the Milky Way and more than 4,000 potential planets.
Researchers calculate there could be billions of stars in the galaxy that have one to three planets in the habitable zone, the region around a star that makes it just right for life to potentially exist on a planet. One confirmed "Goldilocks" planet is Kepler-186f, the first validated Earth-size planet to orbit another star in the habitable region .
