IT 분야 뉴스 매체인 FierceCIO는 최근 IT를 둘러싼 환경이 사물인터넷(IoT, Internet of Things)에 의해 어떻게 변화하고 있는지 보도한 바 있는데, 새로운 연구 결과 얼마나 사물인터넷이 대규모로 구축되고 있는지 알 수 있으며, 모바일 기술이 네트워크에 미치는 영향이 얼마나 큰지 알 수 있다.
IT 기업인 Alcatel-Lucent社가 최근 발표한 보고서에 따르면, 무선으로 연결된 디바이스의 수가 5년 이내에 4백만9억 개에 달할 것으로 나타났다. 이는 모든 남녀와 어린이들이 각각 약 4개씩 단말기를 사용하는 것을 의미한다. 아울러 이 전망은 2013년 약 130억 개에 비해서도 매우 높은 수치이다.

同社는 모바일 데이터의 증가는 모바일 디바이스 진화에 따라 믿을 수 없는 속도로 빨라지고 있다고 주장했다. 모바일 디바이스는 더 이상 개인간 커뮤니케이션을 위한 도구가 아니라, 소비자들로 하여금 고화질 동영상과 웹 검색, 소셜 미디어 이용, 온라인 게임, 온라인 뱅킹 등을 이용할 수 있도록 고성능 멀티미디어 플랫폼으로 변화되어 가고 있다고 同社는 지적했다.
Alcatel-Lucent社의 연구결과는 디바이스에 대한 분석에 근거한 것인데, 즉 얼마나 라이브로 모바일 데이터 트래픽이 사용되는지, 그리고 상업 모바일 데이터 네트워크와 어플리케이션, 디바이스 성능 등에 대한 조사 결과를 활용한 것이다. 대부분의 유사한 연구들은 서베이와 판매 보고서 혹은 특정 웹 서버 사이트의 트래픽 측정에 근거한 것이라고 同社는 지적했다.
IT 시장조사 기관인 IDC社는 사물인터넷 시장 규모가 2014년 6천5백6십억 달러에서 2020년 1조7천억 달러에 달할 것이라고 전망했다. 연간 복합성장률은 거의 17%에 달하는 높은 수치이다. Campus Technology社는 사물인터넷 시장의 폭발적 성장은 현재의 IT 시장을 뒤흔드는 것이 될 것이라고 주장했다.
한편 또 다른 컨설팅 기업인 맥킨지社는 사물인터넷 시장이 2025년 4조∼11조달러 규모로 성장할 것이라고 밝혔다. 맥킨지의 연구조사기관인 맥킨지글로벌연구소(MGI)는 최근 보고서에서 소비자들이 누리게 될 부가가치를 포함해 잠재적 경제 효과를 분석했다며 이같이 밝혔다. 맥킨지는 사물인터넷의 활용 분야를 9가지로 분류했다. 공장, 대중교통 등 도시, 건강, 소매, 물류, 작업장, 차량, 가정, 사무 등 산업 단위가 아닌 실제 환경 단위로 나눈 것이 특징이다.
맥킨지는 이 중 공장 분야에서 기계 운용과 장비 최적화 관련 사물인터넷 시장이 향후 10년 동안 연 1조2000억∼3조7000억 달러 규모로 가장 크게 성장할 것이라고 내다봤다.
조직의 입장에서 좋은 소식은 사물인터넷 어플리케이션이 실제 수익을 내기 시작했다는 점이다. 그러나 예전 FierceCIO가 보도했듯이 사물인터넷에 중점을 둔 개발 활동은 예산과 인력이 부족한 모두 IT 조직에게 많은 부담으로 작용한다.
더불어 사물인터넷의 IT에 있어서 가장 큰 우려 사항은 아직까지 민감한 정보에 대한 보안 위협이 지속적으로 높아지고 있다는 점이다.

FierceCIO recently reported on how the Internet of Things could change everything for IT, and new research studies and tech media coverage confirm just how amazingly large IoT is becoming already, and the impact that mobile technology is having on networks.
A study released today by Alcatel-Lucent predicts that the number of active wireless connected devices will top 40.9 billion in five years. That's approximately four connected devices for every man, woman and child. It's also up from approximately 13 billion in 2013.
"Mobile data growth continues at an incredible rate as mobile devices have evolved," the firm noted in an email to FierceCIO. "No longer just tools for personnel communication, they have become high performing, multimedia platforms that enable consumers to stream high definition video, surf the Web with high performance, engage in social media, participate in online gaming and do banking securely, to name just a few applications."
The Alcatel-Lucent study findings are based on device analytics that measure how mobile data traffic is used in live, commercial mobile data networks, irrespective of application, device capability or corresponding endpoint. Most similar studies are based on surveys, sales reports or traffic measurements at selected Web server sites, the firm noted.
To put a dollar figure on this activity, research firm International Data Corp (IDC) has estimated that the Internet of Things market overall will grow from $656 billion in value in 2014 to $1.7 trillion by 2020. That works out to a compound annual growth rate of nearly 17 percent.
The result of this skyrocketing growth in the IoT market will be a rocking of the "IT status quo," noted an article at Campus Technology.
The good news for organizations is that Internet of Things applications are indeed producing revenue, at least many of them. But as FierceCIO reported, all of the development work targeted at IoT is taking a toll on the IT organization, which lacks sufficient budget and manpower to do much of it right.
Still looming as the greatest concern in IT with IoT are worries about increased security vulnerability of sensitive data.
