핀란드 동부의 작은 마을 '손카야르비(Sonkajarvi)'에서1992년에 처음 시작해 매년 열리는 이 이색 대회는 올해로 20주년을 맞는다.
여자를 업는 방법은 특별한 규정은 없다. 몸무게는 47kg 이상, 나이는 만 17세 이상의 여자만 참가 가능하다. 하지만 아내가 아니어도 관계는 없다.
대회장에서 날씬한 여자를 선택해 대회에 참가하는 경우도 종종 있다.
2013년에 배우 이종수 이지훈 박효준 등이 참가하기도 했다.

Most men will, at some point or another, complain about getting their wives off their backs - but not these fellows.
Indeed, these husbands were very specifically trying to get their other-halves onto their backs as they sprinted around the course of the 20th annual Wife Carrying World Championships.
The event, held in Sonkajarvi, Finland, attracts couples from around the world willing to test out their strength over the 253.5 metre (832 feet) course.
