British artist's statue of 'a queen's sex organs' put on display in the Versailles Palace gardens sparks anger in France

Artist Anish Kapoor's enormous statue is set to open to the public next week in the opulent grounds of the Palace of Versailles

The British artist said that his giant, 60-metre long rusty metal funnel represents 'a queen's vagina' taking power

He is thought to be referring to former Place of Versailles resident and the wife of Louis XVI - Marie Antoinette

But locals in France complained the structure was inappropriate for the family attraction and called for a boycott

A giant sculpture of 'a queen's private parts' has sparked fury as it goes on display in the famous gardens of Versailles Palace.

Following on from the controversy of Paul McCarthy's 'butt-plug' sculpture in Paris, which was vandalised last year, comes artist Anish Kapoor's Dirty Corner monument.

The 60-metre long rusty metal funnel, surrounded by rocks, sits across from the stunning 17th century palace which was once home to the last French king, Louis XVI.

British contemporary sculptor Kapoor claims the impressive structure represents 'a queen's vagina' taking power.

It is thought that he is referring to Marie Antoinette - the wife of Louis XVI famed for telling starving peasants in France 'Let them eat cake.'

Kapoor admits his work is provocative and praised the head of the Palace of Versailles as being 'brave and generous' to display his work.

Dirty Corner (Le Vagin de la Reine) is set to officially open to the public next week but shocked locals have criticised the structure.
Many complained that the adult sculpture has been located so close to the opulent Palace of Versailles - a UNESCO's World Heritage site and one of the largest and most opulent castles in the world.

With 15 million visitors a year, many of which are families with young children, bloggers have protested that it clashes with the attraction's family values and have called for as boycott.

François de Mazières, Versailles's mayor and MP of Nicolas Sarkozy's rightwing Républicains party, tweeted that he thought Kapoor had 'slipped up' over statue.

But others disagree and have hailed the artist as a 'genius provocateur'.

Whether love it or loathe it, locals have been discussing the artwork which is sure to get big crowds when it does open on Tuesday.

Kapoor's last giant sculpture, Monumenta unveiled at the Grand Palais in Paris in 2011,was seen by almost 300,000.

Dirty Corner is part of a series of six installations at the Palace which also include a cannon firing 5kg 'balls' of red wax against a wall named Shooting Into the Corner.

The artwork, which is meant to resemble blood and guts, has not escaped controversy after the artist admitted it was an 'obvious phallic symbol,' reported Le Journal du Dimanche.

He claimed the contemporary artwork - the first to be shown in the palace's Jeu de Paume Room - was meant to question the 'violence in our contemporary society'.

The room was the location of a turning point in history when French nobility rejected royal rule and vowed to create a constitution.

An exhibition of Kapoor's work is on display from June 9 until November 1, 2015.
