VIRGINIA WATER, England — Byeong-hun An finally lived up to the hype.  The South Korean didn’t just win the European Tour’s flagship €5 million (approx. $5.5 million) BMW PGA Championship, he ran away with it.  An returned a closing 7-under-par 65 for a 21-under-par total to win by six shots. He set a new under-par record, beating the 19-under-par Anders Hansen set in 2002 and Scott Drummond equaled in 2004. “This is life changing,” said An, the first Asian winner since the tournament’s inception in 1955.  “It wasn’t easy. I wasn’t confident until I walked down 18. It’s like winning the fifth major. Winning this gets me into so many events.” The 23-year-old became only the third rookie to win the BMW PGA on his debut, following former Wentworth club professional Bernard Gallacher in 1969 and Drummond. An picked up a check for €833,330 (approximately $943,579). More importantly, he earned automatic exemptions into the U.S. Open and Open Championships. It’s the sort of stuff we expected from a player earmarked for greatness in 2009 when, aged 17, he became the youngest winner of the U.S. Amateur Championship.  It’s taken him a little longer to reach the top than many expected. Miguel Angel Jimenez and Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand finished second on 15-under-par.
