영국 교통부 산하 공기업인 HS2(High Speed Two)사는 총 연장 531km의 Y자 노선으로 런던을 기착지로 하여 버밍엄(Birmingham)을 분기점으로 각각 맨체스터(Manchester)와 리즈(Leeds)를 연결하는 고속철도 프로젝트에 미화 약 848억 4천만 불을 투자 할 계획이다. 기존에 알려졌던 705억불(426억 파운드)에 비해 대폭 상향되었다. 동 사업은 총 2단계 구간으로 나누어 추진된다. 1단계는 런던~버밍엄 구간(193km), 2단계는 버밍엄~스태퍼드셔(Staffordshire)~맨체스터, 버밍엄~동 미들랜드(East Midlands)~리즈 구간이다. ‘09년 1월 영국 교통부는 고속철도 사업을 추진하고자 HS2사를 설립하였으며 이듬해인 ’10년에는 프로젝트 계획(안)을 제시했다. ‘13년 1월에는 2단계 구간을 발표한 바 있다. 1단계 공사는 ‘17년 1분기 입찰 공고 후 동년 4분기, 2단계 공사는 ’25년 1분기 입찰공고 후 동년 4분기에 착공하여 각 2025년, 2033년에 완공 될 것으로 전망된다. 한편, 고속철도가 완공되면 시속 400km/h 까지 속력을 낼 수 있게 됨에 따라 지역 간 이동시간이 대폭 단축 될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. High Speed 2 Time Table

High Speed 2 is the new high speed railway line proposed to improve rail travel both within the UK and also connections to the continent. It is designed to create space on overcrowed networks and enable large numbers of people to move more efficiently.  The first phase will connect London and Birmingham with an aim to reduce journey times by approximately half, to 49 minutes. Future plans for Phase 2 of the development are to extend the initial line to create a ‘Y’ shaped network linking Birmingham with Manchester and Leeds.
