The Calbuco volcano in southern Chile erupted for the first time in 42 years on Wednesday, sending a giant plume of ash high into the atmosphere. The 6,500-ft. volcano is considered one of the top three most potentially dangerous among Chile's 90 active volcanos, but yesterday's eruption came as a surprise, according to the regional emergency director of the Los Lagos region where the eruption took place. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but authorities ordered the evacuation of 1,500 residents of three nearby towns in case of any danger. For now, the remote, mountainous area around the volcano remains on high alert.
Several journalists, photographers, and civilians were able to capture incredible snapshots of the eruption from a safe distance away. The colossal, cloud-like column of ash can be seen billowing from the mountain peak, colored red by the hues of the setting sun. At night, photographers d나ocumented the spectacular lightning storm that unfolded above Calbuco as lava began to spew dramatically from the volcano.
