By LYDIA SLATER FOR THE DAILY MAIL
Standing in front of the changing-room mirror, stomach sucked in and legs elegantly crossed, I thought my new designer trousers were a perfect fit.
Until I had to run for the bus and found I could hardly lift my knees. If only, I thought, I had jogged around the shop instead of
But no more: I now follow the Great Wardrobe Workout, designed to strain the seams of any outfit. Here are the five moves you need to know . . .
PENCIL SKIRT KNEE LIFT
We’ve all done it — bought a fashionable, figure-hugging pencil skirt only to realise, too late, that it’s so tight you can’t actually put one foot in front of the other without hoisting the hem up to embarrassing heights in a most unladylike manner.
To avoid this expensive error, try jogging on the spot in your skirt, lifting your knees as high as you can.

Left: wrong, right: correct. Jogging on the spot in your skirt and lifting your knees as high as you can
Size 12: I love this stretchy, high-waisted skirt for its flattering silhouette. When I try to lift my knees, however, the hem is
Size 14: This skirt seems a little loose, but the moment I start my knee lifts, its advantages are clear. The hem stays in place, allowing me

CLINGY FROCK SQUAT
Not a flattering exercise, admittedly, but essential for buying a fitted dress.
If, like me, you spend most of your life sitting at a desk, there’s no point staying vertical to try one on. Instead, squat down with your bottom sticking out and notice the effect.
Left: wrong, right: correct. Squatting down in a new dress will show you how it looks when you're sitting down at work, it shouldn't ride up around your thighs or strain over your behind
Size 10: I prefer this dress in the smaller size (and what woman doesn’t buy the smallest she can squeeze into?). It clings better and I look slimmer.
But when I bend — oh dear! The dress rides up around my thighs and strains over my behind. This is going to be as
Size 12: This looks a bit loose when I put it on. But when I squat, the hem stays by my knees where I want it and the skirt barely wrinkles. This dress should stay looking presentable all day long, whether I’m sitting or standing.

SLIT SKIRT DIP
If you’ve got a dress or skirt with a fashionable side-split, here’s how to ensure you show enough leg to keep it sexy but never indecent.
With feet slightly apart, try to touch your toes on the side without the split, while paying close attention to what’s happening on the other side.
Left: wrong, right: correct. Side-splits skirts and dresses are very on-trend at the
Size 10: This looks OK when I’m standing, but when I bend down, I can hardly breathe. The dress has given me a Michelin Man
Size 12: This feels better in every respect. It hangs without clinging and when I do the Dip I can breathe as I bend. The skirt doesn’t ride up, and the split remains reasonably discreet.

HIGH HEELS TIPTOE TEST
When buying a pair of shoes, of
To avoid this problem, put on the new shoes and then stand on your tiptoes.
Left: wrong, right: correct. When trying on shoes in the shop, don't just have a stroll around, remember to stand on your tiptoes to check they fit
Size 7: These shoes feel a little too tight. However, when I stand on my tiptoes, they grip the back of my heel snugly — meaning they will stay put even if I have to break into a run.
Size 8: These are more comfortable, so ordinarily I’d have bought them. But when I do the lift, the heel slips off. As they’re only going to get looser the more I wear them, the smaller size shoes are clearly a better buy for me.

BUTTON-POPPING SHIRT STRETCH
A core exercise, designed to make sure you’re never going to burst any buttons or expose any flashes of flesh. Do up the shirt, then flex your arm muscles as if you’re lifting weights, at the same time pulling your shoulders apart.
Left: wrong, right: correct. When trying on shirts you should do up all the buttons then flex your arm muscles and pull your shoulders apart to check it fits correctly
Size 12: This looks neat and elegant, but the moment I lift my arms I can feel the strain
Size 14: Equally elegant — and much more forgiving when I flex my biceps, as there’s no creasing over my arms and I won’t be ripping any seams. Best of all, there’s no gaping at the front, so I’m not going to be accidentally exposing my underwear to anyone.
