미국 연구진이 이혼한 뒤 재혼한 부부와 이혼하지 않은 부부들 사이에서 부부관계 빈도에 차이가 나타난다는 연구 결과를 발표했다.     사무엘 스트루프 루이지애나주립대 사회학과 교수팀은 노년층을 대상으로 결혼 유형에 따른 부부관계 빈도를 분석한 결과 초혼을 유지하는 부부가 그렇지 않은 부부보다 19.8% 부부관계를 많이 갖는다는 연구 결과를 국제성연구학회 학술지 ‘성 행동 자료집(Archives of Sexual Behavior)’ 최신호에 게재했다.   연구진은 미국 정부가 2005~2006년 57~85세의 노년 기혼자 1656명을 대상으로 결혼 유형과 현황, 부부관계 빈도, 육체 및 정신적 만족도 등을 조사한 자료를 분석했다.   조사 대상의 약 73%는 현재 배우자가 있으며, 그 중 69%는 처음 결혼한 배우자와 함께 살고 있었고 나머지는 이혼이나 재혼을 경험했다.   연구진이 이들의 결혼 유형에 따라 부부관계 특성을 분석한 결과 처음 결혼한 배우자와 함께 산다고 응답한 사람들이 그렇지 않은 사람들에 비해 19.8%나 부부관계 빈도가 높았다. 반면 부부관계를 하면서 느끼는 육체 및 정신적인 만족은 결혼 유형에 따라 큰 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다.   또 모든 부부가 공통적으로 결혼 초기에는 활발한 부부관계를 갖다가 어느 순간 빈도가 점점 줄어든 뒤, 노년기에 다시 빈도가 증가하는 ‘U’자 형태를 보였다.   스트루프 교수는 “한 번 헤어짐을 경험한 사람들은 그렇지 않은 사람들보다 관계가 영원히 지속될 것이라는 기대와 신뢰가 떨어질 수 있다”며 “이런 인식이 부부관계 빈도에 영향을 미칠 수 있다”고 말했다. 동아시아 사이언스 최영준 기자 jxabbey@donga.com

AFP Relax It's no secret that the sexual activity of married couples starts out strong and subsides over time, but researchers from three universities in the southern US say couples whose marriages last longer than half a century experience a rebound. "As people age, they tend to be more even-keeled, which may help cut down on marital conflict and facilitate regular sexual activity into advanced age," says author Samuel Stroope, Ph.D., an assistant professor of sociology at Louisiana State University. The research team analyzed the marriages and sexual outcomes of 1,656 married adults between the ages of 57 and 85 and, while their findings come as a pleasant surprise, they say couples that made it through 50 years of marriage are few. "Additionally, the study used a snapshot in time -- and therefore cannot prove that length and order of marriage caused sexual frequency," says Dr. Stroope. Yet the results are of intrigue and potential importance to the aging population, which is rapidly growing in developed countries around the world. Dr. Stroope explains the phenomenon of the sexual rebound as stemming from trust that builds over time and the increasing confidence that develops on the part of each individual as a result of knowing their marriage is unlikely to break down. Those who stay married to their first spouse have more sex than those who remarry, although the researchers say marriage order does not affect pleasure and satisfaction.
