프랑스 북부 아미앵에서 풍만한 몸매를 가진 여자 모습으로 추정할 수 있는 2만3천년 전의 소형 석회암 조각상을 발굴했다고 고고학자들이 27일(현지시간) 밝혔다.   고고학자들은 지난여름 아미앵에서 발굴조사를 하던 중 이 구석기 조각상을 우연히 발견했다며 이를 반세기 만에 확인된 "이례적" 성과라며 크게 반기고 있다.   아미앵 지역 문화재담당 책임자는 언론에 조각상을 공개하면서 "이 걸작의 발견은 이례적이며 국제적으로도 의미가 있다"고 설명했다.   발굴조사에 참여한 고고학자 클레망 파리는 "당초 부싯돌 혹은 뼛조각을 찾을 수 있을 것으로 기대했으나 이틀째에 발견한 석회암 조각 더미에서 20여개를 조심스럽게 맞춰본 결과 여자 모습이 나타났다"고 말했다.   제작시기는 탄소-14로 연대를 측정한 결과 이같이 나타났다.   약 12cm 높이의 이 조각은 풍만한 가슴과 엉덩이를 가진 여성을 형상화했다고 추측할 수 있다. 그러나 아쉽게도 머리와 손 부분은 분명하지 않다.   고고학자 파리는 "여성의 모습이 뚜렷하지 않은 것은 본래 의도가 다산과 관련된 여성 이미지를 만들기 위한 것으로 해석할 수 있다"고 설명했다.   유럽에서는 그동안 러시아와 중부 유럽을 중심으로 이와 유사한 조각품이 100개 정도 발견됐는데 프랑스에서는 15개의 대부분이 남서부에서 발견됐고 북부에서 발견된 것은 이번이 처음이다. AMIENS, France (AFP) - A limestone statuette of a shapely woman some 23,000 years old has been discovered in northern France in what archaeologists Thursday described as an "exceptional" find.   Archaeologists stumbled on the Paleolithic-era sculpture during a dig in the summer in Amiens, the first such find in half a century.   "The discovery of this masterpiece is exceptional and internationally significant," said Nicole Phoyu-Yedid, the head of cultural affairs in the area, on showing the find to the media. "We were expecting to find classic al vestiges such as tooled flint or bones," said archaeologist Clement Paris.   But on their second day of fieldwork, the team found a pile of limestone that included fragments which did not seem natural.   "That same night we carefully pieced together the 20-odd fragments and realised it was a female statuette," he added.   Carbon-14 dating showed the statue to be 23,000 years old. About 12cm high, it shows a woman with big breasts and buttocks. The head and arms are less detailed.   "The fact that the sculpture is not totally realistic shows the intent was to produce a symbolic image of a woman linked to fecundity," Paris said.   Around 100 such figures have been found in Europe, mostly in Russia and central Europe, including around 15 in France, most of them discovered in the south-west. straitstimes
