대서양과 태평양을 연결하는 니카라과 운하가 오는 12월 22일(현지시간) 착공된다고 영국 건설전문지 컨스트럭션 등이 정부 발표를 인용해 26일 보도했다.   보도에 따르면 니카라과 운하는 태평양 연안의 브리토에서 시작해 니카라과 호수를 가로질러 대서양 카리브해 연안의 푼타 고르다까지 총 거리 278km 구간에 건설될 예정이다.   시공 업체로는 중국 통신장비제조업체인 신웨이(信威)공사의 왕징(王靖) 회장이 소유한 홍콩니라카과운하개발(HKND)이 맡게 됐다. HKND는 건설권과 함께 50년 운영권도 확보했다.   운하 건설은 총 500억 달러(약 54조9000억원)의 프로젝트로 HKND는 2020년 운영을 목표로 5년 내에 공사를 마친다는 계획이다.   니카라과 운하의 폭은 좁은 곳은 230m에서 넓은 곳은 500m에 달하며 깊이는 27.6m 정도가 될 것으로 예상하고 있다.   니카라과 운하의 길이는 남부에 위치한 파나마 운하(약 80km)보다 3배 이상 길지만 깊이가 파나마 운하(21m)보다 깊어 더 큰 규모의 선박을 수용할 수 있다는 장점이 있다.   그로 인해 파나마 운하 이용에 제약이 있던 선박들은 향후 니카라과를 이용할 수 있을 것으로 예상된다.   니카라과 정부는 운하 건설 과정에서 2개의 항구와 공항, 리조트, 전력개발지구 등도 함께 조성하기로 했다.   니카라과 정부는 운하가 건설되면 국내총생산(GDP)이 2배로 늘어나 인구 절반 이상을 빈곤에서 벗어나게 해줄 것으로 기대하고 있다.   왕징 회장은 "니카라과가 위치한 중앙 아메리카는 글로벌 무역의 흐름에 있어서 남북과 동서의 중심에 위치한다"면서 "니카라과 운하가 새로운 국제 운송 및 물류의 허브가 될 것이라고 믿는다"며 자신감을 나타냈다.   Environmentalists fear the canal could have a devastating effect on Lake Nicaragua

 

Nicaraguan officials say construction of a $50bn (£31bn) canal linking the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans will start on 22 December.   "We are ready to begin," said Zhu Xiaoya, from the Hong Kong-based company HKND which is to build it.   The 278km (172 miles) waterway will be longer, deeper and wider than the Panama Canal.   Opponents are concerned about the impact it may have on Lake Nicaragua and on poor communities in the area.   The route announced in July would pass through the lake, an important source of fresh water. Construction will begin with a port on the Pacific.   Environmentalists have warned of the risks of damming rivers and moving massive amounts of soil. Communities along the route have staged protest marches.   The plan is to build the canal within five years and have it operational by 2020.   The project is expected to include two ports, an airport, a resort and an economic zone for electricity and other companies.   A 600m (2,000ft) bridge would span the width of the canal. "We are sure that the rumours about the project will end as it advances and this century-old dream of Nicaraguans is realised," said Mr Zhu.   Businessman Zhu Xiaoya said Nicaraguans would realise a century-old dream    Communities near Lake Nicaragua have protested against the suggested route President Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua has said in the past that the project will help alleviate poverty for more than half the country's population.   But some have questioned the canal's financial soundness and allege Wang Jing, the Chinese businessman behind the plan, lacks experience in developing or financing big infrastructure projects. bbc
