5 Things to Know About Japan’s Shinkansen Bullet

Trains

Japan’s shinkansen bullet trains began operating 50 years ago on Oct. 1, 1964, only nine days before the opening ceremony of the first Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Since then, they have carried 5.6 billion passengers between Tokyo and Osaka. Here are some facts about the shinkansen and its evolution over the years.

1 BULLET TRAINS WERE BELIEVED TO BE OUTDATED BACK IN THE 1950s
Share on Twitter  According to Central Japan Railway Co., there was a plan to build a high-speed railway in Japan by at least 1887, or 15 years after the first train ran  in the country between Tokyo and Yokohama. But budget constraints and World War II delayed its development. By the 1950s many also believed airplanes and automobiles would overtake railways as the predominant means of transportation.

2 SHINKANSEN TRAINS HAVE KEPT EVOLVING OVER THE YEARS
Share on Twitter  The original shinkansen could take travelers from Tokyo to Osaka in approximately 4 hours. That time has been cut to 2 hours and 25 minutes today.

Meanwhile, the fee for making that trip cost ¥2,480 back then, compared with today’s ¥14,450 ($132). There were 333 shinkansen trains in operation between Tokyo and Osaka in 2012 per day, carrying an average of 391,000 people at a maximum speed of 270 kilometers per hour.

3 THE AVERAGE DELAY OF A SHINKANSEN IS LESS THAN A MINUTE
Share on Twitter  The average delay of a shinkansen traveling between Tokyo and Osaka was 36 seconds in 2012. That includes delays due to heavy rain and other natural disasters. In sharp contrast, Amtrak states on its website that trains traveling 400 kilometers or less are considered “on time” if they arrive within 10 minutes of schedule.

There have been no fatal accidents involving passengers aboard a shinkansen to date.

4 ATOM & PEACE WERE CONSIDERED AS NAMES

Shinkansens in operation between Tokyo and Osaka include the Kodama (Echo), the Hikari (Ray of Light) and Nozomi (Hope). Back in 1964, JR asked the public to submit name proposals and received nearly 560,000 replies. Some of the candidates included Atom, the popular animation character known as Astro Boy overseas, as well as Inazuma (Lightning), Heiwa (Peace) and Olympia.

5 "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WELCOME TO THE SHINKANSEN"
Share on Twitter  The familiar English announcement on the Tokaido shinkansen is provided by Donna Burke, an Australian singer who has also done voiceovers for animation and other TV commercials. She also provides the English audio guidance at the Emperor Showa Memorial Museum as well as the English hearing sections on the TOEIC language test.
