이 애니메이션은 여자의 신체가 거리의 사람들에게, 그리고 자기 자신에게 어떻게 대우받는지를 보여준다.

 

실리아 불윈켈(Celia Bullwinkel)이 만든 "SideWalk(보도)"라는 제목의 짧은 영상은 어린 소녀가 늙은 할머니가 될 때까지 받는 주목이 주제다. 어렸을 때 받는 귀여운 외모에 대한 칭찬부터, 야유, 신체적인 수치심, 늙은이에게 어떤 반응도 보이지 않는 것까지 말이다.

 

불윈켈은 "이 영화는 내가 어렸을 때 경험한 추파를 던지던 사람들에게서 비롯됐다."라고 허핑턴포스트와의 이메일 인터뷰에서 밝혔다. 또한 "예전에 나는 사람들이 보내는 반응이 불쾌하다고 엄마한테 불평하고 있었다. 그런데 엄마의 대답이 '지금을 즐겨라'였다. 언젠가 이런 반응들도 없어질 테고, 그리워진다고 말이다. 나는 처음에 '절대! 그리워하지 않을 거야'라고 했다. 하지만 시간이 지나자 엄마의 말이 사실이라는 걸 알게 됐다."라고 덧붙였다.

 

불윈켈은 그저 길을 걷는 것만으로도 인생이 다른 사람들에 의해 평가받을 수 있다는 것을 보여준다. 영화의 주인공은 자신의 몸을 사랑하기도, 싫어하기도 한다. 이는 불윈켈이 거리에서 받았던 반응들, 그리고 그것들이 없어진다는 것은 무엇을 의미하는지를 반영한다.

 

그녀는 "이 영화가 저와 같은 여자들에게 공감을 불러일으켰으면 합니다. 성장하면서 자신의 좋은 면모를 유지하기 위해 열심히 일해야만 하는 여자들 말입니다."라며 "또한 이 영화는 앞으로 맞딱뜨려야하는 상황을 알지 못하는 어린 소녀들을 위한 것이기도 합니다."라고 허핑턴포스트에 전했다. 당신에게 딸이 있다면, 아이에게 세상의 고통을 좀 더 일찍 보여줄 수 있는 작품이기도 하다.

A new animated video shows how women's bodies are treated on the street -- and in their own minds.

"Sidewalk," a short film directed and animated by Celia Bullwinkel, looks at the attention a woman gets on the street as she ages from a young girl into an elderly woman -- comments on her cute appearance, catcalls, body-shaming, and finally no reaction at all.

 

"The film originated from the catcallers? I encountered in when I was younger," Bullwinkel told The Huffington Post in an email. "I remember complaining to my mother over the phone about these interactions, and her response was, 'Enjoy it now; someday it will all go away, and you might miss it.' My initial reaction was 'NEVER!,' but I came around to see some truth to her statement."

 

Bullwinkel shows how a simple walk down the sidewalk can feel like a lifetime public appraisal. The film's character goes through different phases of loving and hating her body through different parts of her life, which is reflected back at her in the reactions she gets on the street -- and what's implied in their absence.

 

"I wanted the film to resonate with women like myself, who have to work hard in order to keep a positive sense of self as they grow older," Bullwinkel told HuffPost. "The film is also designed [for] young girls, who may not yet be aware of the journey they’re about to embark on."
