오늘날 피라미드를 다시 지으면 얼마나 들까? How Much Would It Cost to Build the Great Pyramid Today?

4500년 전에 세워진 거대한 피라미드는 사람들에게 경의의 대상이고 불가사의 한 일이다.   피라미드의 나사 형태의 입구를 통해 내부로 들어가는 그런 건축 기법은 현대에 들어와서도 가장 이상적인 것으로 꼽고있다.     만일 50억불의 들여 이 불가사의한 건축물을 다시 짓는다면?   우선 피라미드는 각변의 길이가 226.8m 높이 144.3m이고 개당 3톤정도의 2,300,000개의 돌로 만들어져 있다.   따라서 이 피라미드의 총중량은 6,500,000톤이다. 구전에 의하면 피라미드를 짓는데 인부 4천명을 동원해 20년이 걸렸다고 한다.   계산해 보면 밤낮으로 5분간격으로 이 돌들을 운반하여 쌓았다는 결론이 나오게 된다. 아마도 수천명의 인부가 필요로 했을 것이다.   이론에 따르면 피라미드는 긴 외부 램프(그래픽 참조)에 의해서 건설되었으며 피라미드 내부에서부터 위로 쌓는 작업이 이루어졌다. 프랑스 건축가 휴댕에 의하면 이는 가장 현대에 와서도 가장 최선의 건축방법이라고 평가하고 있다.   The External Ramp and Crane Theories   피라미드 건설당시 이집트인은 수레나 말을 이용한 운반법을 알지 못했다. 따라서 지레나 굴림대를 제외하면 오로지 인력에만 의지하여 작업이 이루어졌다. 1마일 즉 1.6km되는 거리를 인부들이 숨을 껄떡거리며 돈을 끌고 왔으리라   어쨌든 피라미드와 같은 거대한 건축물이 지금부터 4,800년전에 만들어 졌다는 것은 참으로 놀라운 일이다.   그럼 현대에 건설을 하게 되면 어떠한 방법이 있을까? 휴댕은 오늘날 피라미드를 똑같이 만들 수 있다고 확신한다.   첫째,사람이 돌을 끄는 대신 차량을 사용할 수 있다. 둘째, 10~15m의 돌을 올리는데 소형크레인을 사용하면 될 것이다.   현대의 크레인은 100층이상의 초고층까지 올릴 수 있으며 헬리콥터를 이용해서 피라미드의 정상의 돌을 올려 놓을 수도 있다.   이렇게 휴댕은 현대의 발달된 장비를 사용해서 인부 1500~2000명이 약 5년만에 건설이 가능하다고 말하고 있으며 공사비로 약 50억불이 들어갈 것으로 예상하고 있다.   인부 수의 계산은 미 후버댐 건설에 근거한다. 건설경기 침체기에 건설된 후버댐의 투입된 콘크리트량은 피라미드의 그것과 거의 비슷하다   한편 영국에서는 축소판 피라미드 건설 캠페인이 벌어지고 있으며 기금도 모으고 있다. 아직 세워질 장소는 정해지지는 않았지만 아마도 세계 각국의 돌들로 건설될 것이다.   거기에는 1000년 후에나 오픈될 타임캡슐이 묻히게된다.   현대판 피라미드는 현대문명에 대한 미래의 메시지이며 프랑스  건축가 휴댕의 제안에 대한 시험대이기도 할 것이다.   <에디터 황기철> kcontents

 

How Much Would It Cost to Build the Great Pyramid Today?

Even with cranes, helicopters, tractors and trucks at our disposal, it would be tough to construct the Great Pyramid of Giza today.

 

Its construction 4,500 years ago is so astounding in some people's eyes that they invoke mystical or even alien involvement.

 

But the current theory of the building of the Great Pyramid — the notion that it was assembled from the inside out, via a spiraling internal ramp — is probably still the best construction plan.

 

Following that plan, we could replicate the Wonder of the Ancient World for a cool $5 billion.

 

First, let's look at the blueprint:

 

The pyramid is 756 feet long on each side, 481 feet high, and composed of 2.3 million stones weighing nearly 3 tons each for a total mass of 6.5 million tons.

 

Legend has it that the structure was erected in just 20 years' time, meaning that a block had to have been moved into place about every 5 minutes of each day and night.

 

That pace would have required the (slave) labor of thousands.

 

While traditional theories hold that the pyramid was built via a long external ramp, such a ramp would have had to wind around for more than a mile to be shallow enough to drag stones up, and it would have had a stone volume twice that of the pyramid itself.
