Mayon Volcano Eruption Underway in the Philippines, Evacuations Ordered

Eruptions are underway at Mayon Volcano, the Philippines most active volcano, prompting officials to evacuate some 50,000 people as fears of an imminent explosive major eruption loom.

"A hazardous eruption is possible within weeks," the head of the Philippines' volcano agency, Renato Solidum, told AFP. "It's already erupting, but not explosive. Currently, the activity is just lava coming down. If there is an explosion, all sides of the volcano are threatened."

Volcanologists and residents witnessed a laundry list of volcanic activity around the more than 8,000-foot Mount Mayon overnight Monday. A pool of lava oozed over the volcano's crater, running more than a half a mile down the volcano's slope; multiple low-frequency earthquakes were reported at the site; and glowing, super-heated boulders were ejected from the crater, tossing them hundreds of feet down the slope.

As a result, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology upgraded the alert level for Mayon Volcano Tuesday, the Associated Press reports, indicating a possible major eruption in just weeks.

Still a volcanic explosion has not yet occurred. Which is good news for the some 50,000 residents that live within five miles of Mayon's base, now designated a "danger-zone" by government authorities. The Guardian reports that government authorities in Albay province, where the volcano is located, hope to evacuate all 50,000 people at risk within the next three days.

So far, more than 4,000 people have been evacuated in the town of Santo Domingo alone, with thousands of others packing up their belongings and moving away from the potential disaster zone.

"We'll have no problems with the 99 percent who will evacuate, but there are some who will be hard-headed," regional civil defense director, Bernardo Alejandro, told The Guardian.

The volcano, located some 210 miles southeast of the Philippine capital of Manila, has frequent, and often deadly, eruptions.  The Associated Press reports that Mount Mayon has erupted 50 times in the last 500 years. Major eruptions in 1814 and 1897 killed thousands of people. And as recently as May 2013, the Mayon unexpectedly erupted, killing five climbers attempting to scale the volcano.
