프랑스 출신의 미국 지휘자, 바이올린 연주자 및 작곡가 프랑스 파리 근교의 뇌이쉬르센(Neuilly-sur-Seine)의 유대계 미국인 가정에서 태어났고, 미국에서 성장하였다. 조부가 메트로폴리탄 오케스트라의 바이올린 연주자인 음악적인 가정에서 자랐으며, 7세 때에 첫 지휘 수업을 받고 8세에 데뷔한 신동이었다. 11세 때에는 라디오 방송에 특별출연하여 NBC 심포니 오케스트라를 지휘하기도 했다. 12세 때에는 일류 오케스트라의 지휘를 위해 미국을 여행하였다. 15세 때에는 바이올린으로 데뷔하였다. 1946년 ~ 1950년에는 피츠버그 대학교에서 수학, 철학, 언어학 등을 수학하였고, 재학 중에 피츠버그 교향악단의 일원으로 활동하면서 현악4중주단을 결성하기도 하였다. 2008년 2월 26일 최초로 평양을 방문한 뉴욕 필하모닉 오케스트라의 공연에서 지휘를 맡았다. 이 공연에서는 양국 국가와 드보르작의 《교향곡 9번 "신세계에서"》, 조지 거쉰의 《파리의 미국인》, 최성환(작곡)의 《아리랑》이[3] 연주되었다. 2014년 7월 13일, 미국 버지니아주 캐슬턴에서 폐렴에 의한 합병증 증세로 인해 84세의 나이로 타계했다

세계 최고의 지휘자로 미국의 명문 뉴욕 필하모닉 오케스트라를 이끌어 북조선(북한) 평양에서 공연한 거장 로린 마젤이 13일 폐렴에 따른 합병증으로 미 남부 버지니아주의 자택에서 향년 84세로 타계했다. 마젤 소속단체가 이날 발표했다.   1930년 프랑스 출신 미국인. 5살 때부터 바이올린을 배웠고 7살에 지휘를 배우기 시작해 재능을 발휘했다. 빈 국립가극장 총감독 등 각국의 오케스트라에서 요직을 맡아 2002년 뉴욕필의 음악 감독. 2008년 미•북 간 첫 본격적인 문화교류로 뉴욕필의 평양공연을 거행, 미•북 양 국가와 조선민요 ‘아리랑’을 연주했다.   1988년에는 런던에서 세계 최초로 베토벤 교향곡 9곡 전곡의 연속 연주를 달성, 화제를 불렀다.   내일 공연도 많아 1995년에는 한신(阪神) 대지진 이재민을 격려하려고 피츠버그 교향악단을 이끌어 고베시(神戸市)에서 자선 콘서트를 열었다. 올해 7∼8월 국제교육음악회 ‘PMF’(삿포로시=札幌市 등)에 참가할 예정이었지만 건강상 이유로 취소했다.   [본문링크] http://www.47news.jp/korean/international_diplomacy/2014/07/093647.html 뉴욕 교도통신

Lorin Maazel, a former child prodigy who went on to become the music director of the New York Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Vienna State Opera and several other ensembles and companies around the world, and who was known for his incisive and sometimes extreme interpretations, died on Sunday at his home in Castleton, Va. He was 84. The cause was complications of pneumonia, said Jenny Lawhorn, a spokeswoman for Mr. Maazel. In recent days, he had been rehearsing for the Castleton Festival, which takes place on his farm. Mr. Maazel (pronounced mah-ZELL) was a study in contradictions, and he evoked strong feelings, favorable and otherwise, from musicians, administrators, critics and audiences. He projected an image of an analytical intellectual — he had studied mathematics and philosophy in college, was fluent in six languages (French, German, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian, as well as English) and kept up with many subjects outside music — and his performances could seem coolly fastidious and emotionally distant.
