쌍방울그룹, 웜비어그룹 될 수도 Lee Jae-myung’s Political Whiplash : Anti-America, Pro-Trump, or just an opportunist?
“몇 년 뒤 쌍방울그룹이 오토 웜비어그룹이 될지 누가 알겠나?”
유진철 전 미주한인회총연합회장은 1일(토) 뉴스앤포스트의 'NNP 뉴포초대석'에서 가진 특별생방송에서 "미국에서 우리가 할 수 있는 일은"이라며 운을 띄웠다.
윤석열 대통령 탄핵정국으로 혼탁해진 상황에서 미국에 사는 해외동포들의 역할론에 관심이 커지고 있는 상황에서, 유 회장은 지난 번 한국을 방문에서 김성태 쌍방울그룹 회장과 이화영 전 경기도 부지사의 수원지방법원과 수원고등법원 형사부 판결문과 자료들을 수집해 왔다고 공개했다.
유 회장은 오토 웜비어 가족측 변호사에게 대북송금사건 판결문과 각종 관련 자료들 일체를 전달할 것이라고 밝혔다.
유 회장은 번역을 해서 전달할 생각이었지만, 웜비어측에서 원본을 그대로 달라고 해서 월요일(2월 3일) 전달할 예정이라고 말했다. 번역상의 오류 문제를 최소화하기 위해선 원본을 확보하는 것이 더 좋다는 게 웜비어측 설명이라고 유 회장은 말했다.
앞으로 어떻게 절차가 이뤄질 것 같냐는 질문에 유 회장은 "한국과 미국은 범인인도 협상이 돼있다"면서 "(김성태과 이화영이) 구금돼 있는 상태이기 때문에, 잡아 넣겠다는 것이 아니라, 일단 미국서 불러서 미국 법정에서 조사를 하는" 절차를 밟게 될 것이라고 말했다.
그는 "쌍방울 그룹이 오토윔비어 그룹이 될지 누가 알겠는가?"라고 덧붙였다. 이는 웜비어법에 의해 상당액을 압류할 수 있음을 시사한 것이다.
나아가 유 회장은 이것을 계기로 이재명 더불어민주당 대표까지 연결될 수 있을 것이라고 말했다.
유 회장은 NNP와의 생방송을 마친 후 기자에게 "웜비어측 변호사가 무엇을 원하느냐고 묻길래 '이재명을 관타나모로 보내고 싶다'고 말했더니 '그렇게 될거야'라고 말했다"는 것이다.
유 회장이 연락을 취하고 있는 변호사는 로버트 톨친(Robert Tolchin)이다. 그는 과거 웜비어 사건 담당 변호사의 고문 역할을 했으며, 2015년 탈북민을 돕다가 중국에서 북한 공작원에 납치돼 평양에서 사망한 김동식 목사의 아들 김한씨와 남동생 김용석씨를 대리해 북한을 상대로 소송을 제기해 3억3천만 달러의 배상 판결을 받아냈던 장본인이기도 하다.
톨친 변호사는 십수차례 북한을 상대로하는 손해배상 소송을 담당한 인물로 알려져 있다.
유 회장은 "웜비어뿐만 아니라 그 이상의 것이 있는데, 그것이 톨친 변호사의 전문분야"라고 덧붙였다.
최근 트럼프 대통령은 관타나모에 악질 범죄자 외국인 3만명을 수용할 수 있도록 시설을 확장하라는 명령을 내린 바 있다.

Lee Jae-myung’s Political Whiplash : Anti-America, Pro-Trump, or just an opportunist?
It is becoming increasingly difficult to decipher Lee Jae-myung’s political stance.
Is he a supporter of the “right-leaning” Donald Trump of the United States, or an anti-America & pro-China figure?
His erratic statements have left many bewildered.
A look at the records of his previous remarks reveals a clear pattern of contradictions.
① Describing U.S. as an “occupying Force of the Korean peninsula” : Hankyung.com(July 2, 2021)
During a visit to the Yi Yuk-sa Memorial Hall in the city of Andong where he was born, Lee, then governor of Gyeonggi Province, remarked the following :
“South Korea failed to purge the remnants of the Japanese imperialism, and those pro-Japanese sympathizers maintained their dominance by joining hands with the U.S. occupying forces.”
② Blaming the U.S. for the Japanese Colonization of Korea : Hankyung.com(November 12, 2021)
During a meeting with a U.S. senator, Lee stated :
“The reason Korea was annexed by Japan was that the U.S. approved it through the Taft-Katsura agreement.”
③ Defining South Korea–U.S.-Japan Joint military Drills as "Extreme Pro-Japan Act" : TvChosun(October 7, 2022)
As South Korea, along with the U.S., and Japan, conducted joint naval exercises in response to North Korean regimes’s provocations, Lee, the leader of the left wing Democratic Party, condemned the three allied nations as “committing an extreme pro-Japan act.”
The remarks he made by far hardly suggest any positive sentiment of friendship towards the U.S.-South Korea alliance or trilateral cooperation including Japan.
Yet, in a puzzling turn of events, Lee has recently begun to verbalize things that seem entirely out of his character.
④ Lee Jae-myung and Park Sun-won : “Trump Deserves a Nobel Peace Prize” : Yonhap News(February 3, 2025)
It was confirmed recently that, on January 30th, a Democratic Party lawmaker Park Sun-won had formally submitted a letter of statement to the Norwegian Nobel Committee recommending President Donald Trump as candidate for the future Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
Media outlets in Seoul also reported that the contents of the recommendation letter was shared with Lee Jae-myung and other high ranking members of Lee’s party.
Lee himself expressed support for the idea as well in a statement he released on November 25, 2024 : “As soon as the Ukraine war ends, the momentum to bring peace to the Korean peninsula will be brought about and I am fully willing to participate in the movement to nominate (former President) Trump to be the next Nobel Peace Prize laureate.”
Lee’s sudden rightward shift has raised eyebrows even within his own party, with some members questioning his motives.
It should be noted that any person can change over time through various events and extensive introspection.
But has Lee really lived long enough to have undergone such a profound ideological transposition?
So what is driving the drastic turn of his political stance?
Is he feeling cornered by the developments of recent events?
That seems quite unlikely.
Lee has never been the type to panic under pressure.
He has been building a career on being fiercely steadfast in denying any accusations made against him, no matter how dire the circumstances.
The slightest notion that he is now on the run is both implausible and laughable.
Still, his dramatic political pivot is nothing short of an astonishing transfiguration.
It wasn’t long ago that he and his party pushed for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol accusing him of antagonizing North Korea, China, and Russia.
And suddenly, he is now advocating for Donald Trump to receive a Nobel Prize.
The inconsistency he demonstrated looks just dizzying and needs to be taken into consideration as a deeply alarming sign.
