#1 Construction Industry Groups Unite to Reduce Suicide Rate Among Construction Workers

November 5, 2018 Shane Hedmond

The construction industry ranks first in total suicides and second in suicide rate compared to all other industries in the United States, according to a 2016 study by the Center for Disease Control (CDC).  This sad fact led more than 75 industry groups to form an alliance to combat the epidemic in 2016. Some of the members recently met in in Washington DC to help construction companies to better address mental health issues among their workers.

#2 China's CSCEC to train 10,000 Egyptian construction workers

by Jack Ball on Nov 6, 2018

The agreement by CSECE’s board of directors to bear the cost of training the workers followed a meeting with Egyptian Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, as reported by Egypt Today.

Madbouly, who also acts as the country’s Housing Minister, said that buildings of the ministries and government institutions in the new capital are being constructed quickly by Egyptian companies and urged Chinese companies to move as fast as their Egyptian peers.

The Cairo-based news outlet added that Juan King, CSCEC chairman, said there will be no delay in construction works, noting a separate meeting will take place at CSCEC to send extra experts to Egypt to train the workers.

China’s largest construction conglomerate, CSCEC is tasked with building the central business district of Egypt’s new administration capital some 50km east of current capital Cairo.

To be developed on a land area of 700km2 – around 12 times the size of Manhattan Island – the megaproject is one of the initiatives rolled out to tackle Cairo’s chronic congestion problem against a backdrop of a growing urban population.

The news came on the second day of Madbouly’s visit to Shanghai where he reportedly told officials of Beijing-based CSCEC that Egyptian President Fatah al-Sisi “follows up on the developments in the new capital on a daily basis”.

The capital city project is a result of a memorandum of understanding signed in 2015 between UAE-based Capital City Planners and Egypt’s government to build a new city that can accommodate a population of five million.
