Saudi Arabia's first 3D printed house revealed

Driven as part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, the kingdom has reportedly built its first house using 3D printing technology.

As reported by Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the kingdom's National Housing and Industrial Development and Logistics Program announced on 6 November 2018 that it has succeeded in “the first home building experience” using 3D printing technology.

Located on Ministry of Housing land to the west of the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, the house was built by Dutch company CyBe – described by SPA as one of the top companies that owns 3D building technology globally.

The aim of the project is to keep “abreast of the technological progress in the world of future construction, to benefit from the latest technologies in the world, and to be the first to promote the adoption of innovative construction techniques”.

Strengthening local Saudi industry, which is in line with the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 and the National Transformation (NTP) 2020 Program, were also reasons behind the project.

A primary focus of the latter is to gradually reduce the kingdom’s dependence of crude oil exports, in turn transforming Saudi into a global investment hub. The programme was, in part, driven too by lower oil prices – particularly after the value of the commodity peaked in 2008. 

SPA said the house will be available for visits and access to this experience from specialists, workers and other interested in this sector of engineers, architects, and companies specializing in the field of construction.
