A director of a 'smart city' project which will use Google-backed software to monitor citizens, rubbish bins and traffic lights has resigned over surveillance concerns.
Ann Cavoukian has quit her job at Sidewalk Labs, owned by the same company as the search giant, to 'make a strong statement' amid privacy fears for the planned community in Toronto.

The waterfront project - known as Sidewalk Toronto - will house 5,000 people and host another 5,000 workers within three to four years, according to its creators.
Plans being developed at the Alphabet's New York based Sidewalk Labs subsidiary will see with a disused
area of Toronto's waterfront turned into the first of its high tech neighbourhoods, as a pilot project for bigger
things to come
But data collected from the city's residents would not be 'de-identified' as Ms Cavoukian said she had been promised, Global News reported.
