South Korea’s leading cable manufacturer LS Cable & Systems Ltd. won a $126 million order to supply extra-high voltage cables from Bahrain’s Electricity & Water Authority, a move that is expected to lead to more similar deals from the Middle East country, the company said on Thursday.

LS전선, 1억2555만달러 규모 바레인 400㎸ 초고압 케이블 프로젝트 턴키 수주 바레인 수전력청 발주 바레인 전역 신규 전력망 구축   LS전선이 침체된 중동 시장에서 초대형 프로젝트를 수주하며 시장 지배력 확대에 나섰다.  LS전선은 11일 바레인 수전력청의 1억2555만달러(약 1424억원) 규모 초고압 케이블 프로젝트를 턴키로 수주했다고 밝혔다. 이 프로젝트는 바레인 정부가 산업화와 도시화에 따라 필요한 전력을 공급하기 위해 바레인 전역에 신규 전력망을 구축하는 사업이다. LS전선은 프리미엄급인 400㎸ 초고압 케이블의 공급은 물론, 전기와 토목 공사 등 엔지니어링 일체를 수행한다.  중동은 전 세계 초고압 케이블 수요의 약 20%를 차지하는 중요한 시장이지만 저유가로 인해 수년간 대형 인프라 투자가 지연돼 왔다. The Korean cable company said it has won the contract at a turnkey basis, which means that it is responsible for all the process of setting up power networks across the island country in the Persian Gulf, ranging from the supply of 400-kilovolt (kV) power cables to related installation and construction. 

LS Cable said it was able to win the latest contract after it had successfully completed multiple power cable projects in Bahrain for the past ten years. It expects the latest order would allow it to obtain more similar orders from the Middle Eastern country, which has been keeping up nation-wide efforts to accelerate modernizing and developing industries after the discovery of an 80-billion barrel oilfield in the spring, the biggest since the 1930s. 

LS Cable has been stably maintaining its lead in the Middle Eastern cable market. In Qatar, the company clinched a 500 billion won ($437.3 million) submarine cable deal in 2012 and a 220 billion won extra-high voltage cable deal in 2017.
