Development cost of Aljada’s Central Hub is $272m (AED1bn), but this does not include the price of the land.

Arada expect to break ground on the 176,515m² project in May 2018, despite the fact a main construction contract has not been awarded.Still, Phase 1 is expected to be done by the end of the year. Phase 2 will wrap up in Q4 2019. Phase 3 by the close of 2020.

Zaha Hadid Architects’ winning design aims to capture the shape a water droplet makes when it hits the ground, scattering smaller drops in every direction. The project will see elliptical buildings of varying size built around a central observation tower.

A collection of water features that use recycled wastewater to nourish plants was an aspect of the design that Arada said matched its “vision” for a project set to become Sharjah’s biggest ever real estate development.

Chairman of Arada, Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, praised Zaha Hadid Architects for creating a “forward-thinking and transformational urban design”.

Zaha Hadid Architects’ head of Middle East, Tariq Khayyat, said: “Zaha Hadid Architects is proud to partner with Arada on a project designed for Sharjah’s community and its visitors. Applying all our knowledge and experience in creating some of the world’s most popular civic spaces, we look forward to working closely with ARADA to deliver the Central Hub.”

Spread across an area of 2.2km², the entire $6.5bn Aljada mega development in Sharjah, UAE, is expected to be complete by 2025. It sits on the last major plot of undeveloped land in Sharjah.
