Nine workers were killed Monday when they fell from a collapsing cable bridge under construction about an hour outside Bogota, Colombia. A tenth worker died later in a hospital.

The cable-stayed bridge was being constructed in the Bogota-Villavicencio road corridor as part of a highway improvement project being carried out by Coviandes, a majority- owned Colombian investment corporation.

Civil defense authorities said the workers were working on drainage along the bridge when a tower appearred to topple over, dropping the workers and sections for the bridge deck and cables 920 feet into a ravine.

The 1,464-foot long bridge was set to be completed in June as part of a highway connecting Bogota to the city of Villavicencio. The bridge and road overhaul are a part of the country’s massive “4G” infrastructure program that is attracting billions of dollars in private-public partnership investments to improve Colombia’s transportation system with eight bridges and five tunnels.

Construction officials said that fortunately not many workers were on the bridge at the time of the collapse as staff were receiving a safety briefing.
