The paper bike helmet you pop in your pocket: Honeycomb design that could be bought for just £5 wins its inventor a major engineering award

  • Helmet folds to the tenth of the size of a regular helmet
  • It can be recycled and offers just as good protection
  • Isis Shiffer, 29, an industrial design student, won Dyson prize

A paper bicycle helmet that folds to the tenth of the size of a regular helmet has won a prestigious engineering prize for a female inventor.

Isis Shiffer, 29, an industrial design student, won the £30,000 Dyson design prize for her 'EcoHelmet'.

The helmet is intended to be cheap – priced around £5 - for bike rental schemes where people don't have protective headgear.

Miss Shiffer said she got the idea while using 'Boris bikes' in London when she was studying in London on a six-month placement from the Pratt Institute in New York, her home town.

She saw the need for a cheap, light-weight helmet suitable for users of the many bike schemes around the world.

The helmet, made out of paper, folds out like a honeycomb and has a coating that makes it resistant to rain for up to three hours.

Miss Shiffer said: 'There were no easily accessible helmet options available. I was on unfamiliar streets, cycling in foreign countries.

'It was nerve wracking – especially going on roundabouts,' and felt having a helmet would make her feel much safer.

Tests on a machine at Imperial College set up to test cycle helmets to EU specifications shows that her invention is just as good at protecting the skull as conventional helmets.

'It's meant to be cheap, and useful for people using bike share schemes. I've done a bunch of crash tests myself and used the crash rig at Imperial College.'

James Dyson, the inventor behind the Dyson range of vacuum cleaners said: 'EcoHelmet solves an obvious problem in an incredibly elegant way. But its simplicity belies an impressive amount of research and development. I look forward to seeing EcoHelmets used in bike shares across the world.'

The helmet measures 12 inches by 2 inches, when folded, and is around 12 x 12 when folded out, similar to the size of a conventional crash hat.

Miss Shiffer calculates you could fit 9 of her helmets in the space taken up by one conventional helmet.

The helmet is deliberately not intended for long life – but she hopes to include an indicator that will show when the helmet has passed its useful life.
