The UAE's Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) announced the installation of its Unit 3 Steam Generators (SGs), marking a milestone in the development of the Barakah nuclear power plant (Barakah NPP).

Two stainless steel SGs were installed for the project.

The units were manufactured in South Korea by Doosan Heavy Industries, a member of ENEC's prime contractor consortium for the project.

Following their four-year manufacture process, the generators were transported to Barakah where they were installed inside the Unit 3 Reactor Containment Building.

Each of Barakah’s steam generators contain numerous tubes that safely carry heated water at high pressure.

These tubes are made of an alloy composed of nickel, chromium and iron, making them strong and corrosion resistant, even at high temperatures, according to WAM.

Additional piping work is expected to be carried out over the next six months to connect the SGs with the Unit 3 Reactor Vessel, Turbine Generator, and Condenser.

Remarking on the development, Mohamed Al Hammadi, the CEO of ENEC, said: "This success is a result of ENEC’s extensive collaboration with its prime contractor, the Korean Electric Power Corporation, and the robust culture of safety we have fostered at Barakah."

SGs are integral to the conversion of nuclear fission's energy into electricity: the heat generated from the nuclear reaction turns water into steam, which is then used to spin a turbine and generate electricity.
