일본기업들이 900억엔(한화 8,460억원) 규모의 방글라데시 교량사업에서 수주에 성공했다고 24일 니혼게이자이신문이 보도했다. 아베신조 총리가 주장하는 ‘아시아 인프라투자’를 강화했다는 분석이다.  일본 기업 오오바야시구미(大林組)와 시미즈 건설(淸水建設) 등 4개 건설사는 방글라데시 수도 다카와 제2도시 치타공을 연결하는 간선도로에 위치한 3개의 다리를 건설키로 했다. 최근 경제활동이 급증하며 간선도로를 이용하는 차량이 증가하자 방글라데시 정부는 다리를 새로 건설키로 한 것.   오오바야시구마와 시미즈건설, JFE엔지니어링과 IHI인프라시스템은 25일 방글라데시 정부와 조인식을 갖고 수주를 정식으로 체결한다. 이어 내년 초 공사에 착수해 2019년까지 완공할 예정이다.   일본 정부는 이 사업을 위해 방글라데시아 289억엔의 차관을 제공키로 했다. 아울러 일본은 2014년부터 향후 5년간 방글라데시에 총 6000억엔 규모의 엔 차관을 공여할 계획이다.  한편 방글라데시의 인구는 1억6000만명으로 세계 8위에 해당한다. 풍부한 인구를 바탕으로 한 노동력이 강점이다. 방글라데시에 진출한 일본기업은 지난 1월 기준 220개사로 최근 4년간 2배 증가했다. [이데일리 김인경 기자]

TOKYO -- A consortium of four Japanese companies is expected to receive the contract for a major bridge project in Bangladesh -- a sizable step in Tokyo's efforts to snare orders for high-quality infrastructure in Asia.

Obayashi, Shimizu, JFE Engineering and IHI Infrastructure Systems will team to build three bridges along the country's busiest expressway, which connects capital Dhaka with the second-largest city, Chittagong. The decision comes down Wednesday, when a signing ceremony is slated. Construction is set to begin in early 2016, for completion by 2019.

That road accounts for 80% of the country's domestic freight and passenger traffic, and rocketing usage in recent years has led to heavy congestion. The three bridges will roughly double the road's daily capacity and cut the time required to cross rivers along the way by four-fifths.

The project is seen costing around 90 billion yen ($726 million), including rehabilitation of existing bridges. The Japanese government agreed to loan 28.9 billion yen of that, and may offer more. The companies' cutting-edge construction technologies, including robust earthquake protection effective even on soft and unstable ground, likely helped pull in the order.

The Japanese government plans to lend 600 billion yen to projects in Bangladesh in the five years from 2014. Most will go toward state-of-the-art thermal power plants and other projects aimed at building a stable power supply.

Bangladesh has roughly 160 million people, making it the world's eighth-most-populous nation. The country boasts a rich labor supply, and its economy has grown steadily around 6% annually for the past 10 years. The number of Japanese companies setting up shop there doubled in the last four years to around 220 as of January, figures from the government-affiliated Japan External Trade Organization show.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government looks to raise Japanese infrastructure investment in Asia to $110 billion for 2016 to 2020 -- up 30% from the 2011-2015 level. It is revising its current policy of making yen-denominated loans, aiming to let emerging nations take better advantage of Japanese funds and form a counterweight to the China-led Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank.
