일에서 벗어나 스트레스 없이 매일 생활하면 얼마나 좋을까. 문득 이런 생각을 떠올려 본 사람들이 있을 것이다. 그런데 이런 실직 상태가 길어지면 우리의 정신 건강에 나쁜 영향을 줄 수 있다는 연구결과가 나와 관심이 쏠리고 있다. 영국 스코틀랜드 스털링대 크리스토퍼 보이스 박사가 이끈 국제 연구진이 독일 사회 경제 패널(SOEP) 설문자료를 이용해 연구 시작 시점이었던 2005년 당시 취업한 독일인 성인남녀 6769명을 대상으로, 이들이 4년 동안 각각 성격이 어떻게 변화하는지를 분석했다. 연구진에 따르면, 조사 동안 6700명이 넘는 대상자 가운데 210명은 실직했고 다른 251명은 실직 이후 재취업에 성공했다. 그리고 나머지 6308명은 같은 직업에 계속 종사하고 있었다. 그런데 실직 기간이 오랜 기간 계속된 남녀 대상자들은 일종의 친절함을 나타내는 ‘친화성’(agreeableness)이 이전보다 떨어진 것으로 나타났다. 그런데 실직 기간이 1~2년 정도 일시적으로 이어진 일부 남성에서는 친화성이 오히려 상승하기도 했다. 이렇듯 친화성 변화에는 성별이나 기간에 따라 약간의 차이가 있었지만, 남녀 모두 실직 상태가 오래되면 무뚝뚝하게 변하고 자신감을 잃을 뿐만 아니라 폐쇄적인 성격이 돼 여행 등 야외 활동조차 귀찮아하는 성격으로 변했다고 연구진은 분석했다. 하지만 재취업이 확정되면 사람들은 다시 친화성을 되찾는 성향을 보였다고 한다. 이에 대해 보이스 박사는 “실직 상태가 길어져 부정적인 생각에 젖어들게 되면 재취업하기 어려운 악순환에 빠지기 쉽다”면서 “일하지 않는 환경이 우리 뇌의 사고회로에 부정적인 요인이 되므로 주의할 필요가 있다”고 말했다. 한편 이 연구결과는 미국 정신의학회가 발간하는 ‘응용심리학 저널(Journal of Applied Psychology)’ 7월호에 실렸다. Unemployment has a strongly negative influence on well-being, but it is unclear whether it also alters basic personality traits. Whether personality changes arise through natural maturation processes or contextual/environmental factors is still a matter of debate. Unemployment, a relatively unexpected and commonly occurring life event, may shed light on the relevance of context for personality change. We examined, using a latent change model, the influence of unemployment on the five-factor model of personality in a sample of 6,769 German adults, who completed personality measures at 2 time points 4 years apart. All participants were employed at the first time point, and a subset became unemployed over the course of the study. By the second time point, participants had either remained in employment, been unemployed from 1 to 4 years, or had experienced some unemployment but become reemployed. Compared with those who had remained in employment, unemployed men and women experienced significant patterns of change in their mean levels of agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness, whereas reemployed individuals experienced limited change. The results indicate that unemployment has wider psychological implications than previously thought.
