중동 및 아프리카 지역이 세계 원자력발전 수요의 중심지로 부상할 것이라는 분석이 나왔다.  20일 수출입은행 해외경제연구소에 따르면 사우디아라비아 16기, 터키 12기, 남아프리카 8기 등 MENA(중동·Middle East) 지역에 54기 약 62GW 규모의 원전 건설계획이 추진되고 있다.  금액기준으로 MENA 지역 원전시장 규모는 3000억 달러에 달할 것으로 전망된다.  이 지역 원전 수요가 늘어날 것으로 예상되는 이유는 담수화에 필요한 전력 공급 방안의 일환으로 원전이 가장 효과적인 수단으로 부상하고 있기 때문이다.  한편 지난해 말 가동 중인 원전의 지역별 분포는 유럽지역 187기, 미주지역 125기, 아시아지역 123기다.  파이낸셜뉴스 relee@fnnews.com 이승환 기자

Saudis Announce Plan to Build 1st Nuclear Reactor 

September 17, 2014  Energy officials in Saudi Arabia announced Tuesday that they are embarking on a plan to build a nuclear reactor “for peaceful purposes,” Israel’s NRG News reported, quoting the London-based “Al-Hayat” Arabic-language daily. Senior sources in the Muslim kingdom told the newspaper that construction of the reactor is expected to begin before the end of the calendar year. “Construction of the first Saudi nuclear reactor will take ten years, according to the plan, although we hope that we can complete the task in less time,” the newspaper said, quoting Saudi sources. The kingdom’s ultimate goal, the report stated, is to establish four nuclear reactors throughout the country. Meanwhile, nuclear industry monitor, the World Nuclear Association (WNA) said, in a report released in May, that the kingdom’s goal is, in fact, 16 nuclear power reactors, “to be built over the next 20 years at a cost of more than $80 billion, with the first reactor on line in 2022.” The Saudis hope to reach “17 GWe of nuclear capacity by 2032,” which would supply 15 percent of their projected needs by then. “The development of atomic energy is essential to meet the Kingdom’s growing requirements for energy to generate electricity, produce desalinated water and reduce reliance on depleting hydrocarbon resources,” Saudi officials said in 2010. The Australian reported in mid August, that the Kingdom and China’s state-owned National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) will collaborate on nuclear and renewable energy, according to a deal signed between the sides in 2012.
