With less than a year to go until complex building and infrastructure work needs to be finished, Expo 2020 Dubai has passed an important milestone as the countdown begins to its opening on 20 October 2020.

The past year has witnessed a number of Expo 2020-related announcements, particularly those related to participating nations’ pavilions, as well as the megaproject's three Thematic Pavilions – Opportunity, Mobility, and Sustainability.

Speaking to Construction Week when it visited the 4.38km2 expo site in October, Ahmed Al Khatib, Expo 2020’s vice president for real estate and delivery, said foundations and structural works are now complete within the three districts.

All concrete works for the districts has also been completed, with about 243,000m³ of concrete poured. Precast production and installation was taking place at the time of the visit, with façade, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing, and public-realm works also in progress.

Khatib said the Phase 1 infrastructure package, which includes work for the Expo Village and the Dubai 2020 Metro Line, was almost complete: “Our Phase 2 infrastructural works will be completed in 2019.”

During the site visit, he said he was pleased with the pace of progress to date, adding that he expected activity to ramp up in the next nine months.

Indeed, the number of staff on the ground will double to 40,000 – both manual and non-manual workers – when building activity reaches its busiest period in the first half of 2019. These will include third-party stakeholders and building teams for the 100-plus international participants.

With this in mind, Expo 2020 Dubai has provided an aerial construction update [below], which shows the rapid construction taking place, alongside a glimpse into what the three Thematic Pavilions will look like in 2020.
