Gazing skywards with their hands over their ears, these astonishing pictures capture the moment terrified Palestinians watch Israeli missiles falling from the sky before smashing into an apartment block.

As young men and children congregate in the street, Israeli drones target the building with three strikes, sending thick plumes of smoke billowing into the air just a few metres away.

An F-16 fighter jet then roars overhead to drop the final, knock-out missile, obliterating the building with an almighty boom that rocks the district.

The images, which captured the missiles from different points in the street, were taken earlier this week in Gaza City which has been under constant bombardment since the conflict began three weeks ago.

Just a few minutes earlier, the owner of flats had been told of the impending strike after the Israeli military phoned his son to warn them.

Bashir al-Ramlawi, 58, said he scampered out of the building with 35 of his relatives just in time to see his home reduced to rubble, it was reported by Sudarsan Raghavan from The Washington Post.

Many of his relatives - like some 200,000 other Gazans - had already fled their own houses and now they were homeless again.

As the dust settled, Mr al-Ramlawi said: 'I don’t know why they hit my house. We don't know where we will go.'
Afterwards, people gathered to take take pictures of the devastation on their mobile phones.

War and peace:

The incredible photographs that contrast the horror of the D-Day battlefields in 1944 with their present-day serenity

This year marks 70 years since Allied invasion of France in 1944 with thousands of troops landed in Normandy
Here photographs show the incredible transformation of battlefields from the invasion to the present day

By Daily Mail Reporter
On June 6, 1944, The Allies launched the biggest seaborne invasion ever seen, Operation Overlord, as they attempted to overcome the Nazi juggernaut that had conquered most of mainland Europe.

That attack, and the battles that followed, would see some of the fiercest fighting of the Second World War brought to the coast and countryside of France.

Here an incredible set of photographs shows those battlefields as they were then, littered with burned out planes, wounded soldiers and destroyed buildings, and as they are now, packed with tourists, sunbathers, and beach huts.

Packed with landing craft, tanks, trucks, soldiers and anti-aircraft balloons, it is difficult to recognise the beach near Coleville-sur-Mer, code-named Omaha Beach, when it is set against its serene modern-day counterpart, home to nothing more than a few walkers and a caravan.

The 35 Most Powerful Militaries In The World

Amanda Macias, Jeremy Bender and Skye Gould

There's only one true way to compare military strength, and thankfully we haven't had the opportunity to compare powerful countries in recent decades  — though with a powder keg in the South China Sea, standoffs in Ukraine, and proxy wars throughout the Middle East, we are alarmingly close.

For a simpler evaluation of military power, we turn to the Global Firepower Index, a ranking of 106 nations based on more than 50 factors including overall military budget, available manpower, and the amount of equipment each country has in its respective arsenal, as well as access to resources.

The index focuses on quantity, ignoring significant quantitative differences (North Korea's 78 submarines, for instance, aren't exactly state of the art). It also does not factor in nuclear stockpiles — still the ultimate trump card in geopolitics. It also does not penalize landlocked nations for lack of a standing navy.

We've created a chart to compare the top 35 militaries according to the Global Firepower Index. The ranking, released in April, involves a complex set of data that is subject to ongoing adjustments and corrections.

This is the harrowing moment a young Palestinian man was allegedly shot by an Israeli sniper in front of a camera crew helping him search for his family before being fatally shot again as he struggled to get up.

The footage, which MailOnline can not independently verify, was captured by an activist from the pro-Palestinian International Solidarity Movement in the Shijaiyah neighbourhood of Gaza City.

Muhammad Abdellah claimed he and other ISM volunteers made their way into Shijaiyah on Sunday after the area came under prolonged and heavy bombardment from Israel, which claims the neighbourhood is a major source for Hamas rocket fire against its civilians.

The senior member of the militant organisation Islamic Jihad was sitting on an orange divan outside his house when a rocket struck with clinical precision just before midnight.

Hafez Hamad was killed instantly, along with four members of his family. The area where they had been talking just seconds earlier in the sultry Mediterranean heat of Gaza was now a smoking, rubble-strewn crater.

A few hours later, a car carrying three Islamic Jihad militants was also hit and its occupants obliterated.

Forensic analysis: Human Rights Watch has produced a series of graphics like this which they say document the execution of at least 160 Iraqi prisoners in two locations in Tikrit over four days after cross-referencing landmarks and individuals in various images with satellite photographs

Iraq's killing field: ISIS massacred up to 190 prisoners in Tikrit in just four days, according to analysis of satellite images and horrific pictures posted by jihadists

Iraqi insurgents executed at least 160 prisoners in just four days in the northern city of Tikrit, according to a human rights group which cited analysis of satellite imagery and shocking photographs released by the militants.

The U.S.-based Human Rights Watch said militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) killed between 160 and 190 men in two locations in Tikrit between June 11 and June 14.

'The number of victims may well be much higher, but the difficulty of locating bodies and accessing the area has prevented a full investigation,' it said.

After overrunning large swaths of northern Iraq and capturing the cities of Mosul and Tikrit earlier this month, the Islamic extremist group posted graphic photos on a militant website that appeared to show fighters loading dozens of captured soldiers onto flatbed trucks.

They were then forced them to lie in a shallow ditch with their hands tied behind their backs. A final set of photos shows bodies piled up.

Peter Bouckaert, emergencies director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement: 'The photos and satellite images from Tikrit provide strong evidence of a horrible war crime that needs further investigation.'
