Hankook’s R&D division has been working with biorobotics specialists from Seoul National University and Harvard engineers on a bizarre transforming origami wheel project. These folding oddities can drastically alter their diameter and carry heavy masses.
It’s taken almost a decade to get thus far, however the workforce has bought a completely functioning set of transforming wheels constructed and connected them to a few demonstration autos, demonstrating that the wheels can range their diameter from 46 to 80 cm (18.1 to 31.5 in), whereas supporting sufficient weight to place a full-size car on high.
The wheels are a three-layer building based mostly on a thick, versatile composite membrane designed to fold alongside comparable traces to an origami waterbomb. To add structural power and put on resistance, the non-folding panels are sandwiched with laser-cut aluminum aspect panels, which maintain a lot of the membrane inflexible, except the fold traces.

한국타이어의 R&D 부서는 서울대학교의 바이오로보틱스 전문가 그리고 하버드 기술자들과 함께 기이하게 변형된 종이접기 휠 프로젝트에 대해 연구해왔다. 이러한 접이식 특이사항은 직경을 크게 변화시키고 무거운 질량을 운반할 수 있다.
지금까지 거의 10년이 걸렸지만, 인력은 완전히 기능하는 변환 휠 세트를 구입하여 몇 대의 시승용 자동차에 연결했으며, 휠의 직경이 46~80cm(18.1~31.5인치)에 이를 수 있다는 것을 입증하는 한편, 풀사이즈 자동차를 높이 세울 수 있는 충분한 무게를 지원할 수 있다..
바퀴는 접히도록 설계된 두껍고 다재다능한 복합막을 기반으로 한 3층 구조로 되어 있다.
트랜스포밍 타이어
한국타이어 연구팀의 재료·제작 기술과 서울대 연구팀의 설계 기술의 합작으로 개발됐으며, 종이접기 구조를 활용해 1톤급 차량에도 적용 가능한 가변형 바퀴다. 지난 2019년 '더 넥스트 드라이빙 랩'의 네 번째 캠페인을 통해 처음 선보였다.
종이접기 원리에 기반한 형상 가변 구조 설계 기술을 접목해 포장도로에서는 작은 바퀴 형태로 안정적이고 민첩한 주행이 가능하고, 험로에서는 돌기가 있는 큰 지름의 바퀴 형태로 변해 높은 기동성을 확보할 수 있도록 설계됐다. 타이어 하나만으로 다양한 노면에서의 주행이 가능한 셈이다.
특히 1톤 이상의 하중을 견딜 수 있도록 지름을 450mm에서 800mm까지 변화시킬 수 있는 점이 특징이다. 배달용 로봇, 우주 탐사 차량 등 다양한 방면에서 활용할 수 있다.
