미국에서 비트코인으로 직원들의 월급을 지급하는 지자체가 나왔다고 블룸버그통신이 11일(현지시간) 보도했다.

화제의 지자체는 플로리다주의 마이애미시다. 프란시스 수아레스 마이애미 시장은 이날 기자회견을 통해 직원들의 급여를 비트코인으로 지급하는 것은 물론 비트코인으로 세금을 납부하는 것도 인정할 것이라고 밝혔다.

그는 직원들이 원하면 비트코인으로 월급을 수령할 수 있고, 납세자 중 암호화폐(가상화폐)로 세금을 납부하길 원하는 사람들은 그렇게 할 수 있다고 덧붙였다.

그는 시정부가 운용하는 일부 펀드를 암호화폐에 투자하는 것도 고려하고 있다고 밝혔다.

수아레스 시장의 이같은 조치는 실리콘밸리에 밀집해 있는 첨단 IT 회사를 플로리다로 유치하기 위한 노력 중 하나로 보인다. 최근 실리콘밸리의 IT업체들은 세금이 높은 실리콘밸리를 떠나 세금이 싼 텍사스나 플로리다주 등 미국 남부지역으로 이전을 고려하고 있다.

그의 이같은 제안은 테슬라가 지난 8일 15억달러어치 비트코인을 구입하자 더욱 힘을 받고 있다고 블룸버그는 전했다.

한편 수아레스 시장은 올해 재선을 노리고 있다.
