Bitcoin (the infamously volatile cryptocurrency) has surged to its most expensive levels ever, thanks to the world's richest man.

테슬라 “비트코인 1조원 넘게 투자”...이 말에 비트코인 4932만원 돌파
테슬라가 15억 달러(약 1조 6815억원) 어치의 비트코인을 매입했다고 미 CNBC방송, 블룸버그 통신 등이 8일(현지 시각) 보도했다.
외신에 따르면, 테슬라는 이날 이 같은 내용이 담긴 자료를 미국증권거래소(SEC)에 제출했다. 테슬라는 제출 자료에서 “지난달 비트코인에 대한 투자 정책을 업데이트했다”며 “현금 수익을 다양화하고 수익을 극대화하는 등 더 많은 유연성을 확보하는 차원에서 비트코인을 매입했다”고 밝혔다.
테슬라는 자사 전기차를 구입할 때 비트코인으로 결제가 가능하도록 할 방침이다. 전세계 주요 자동차 생산업체 중 최초로 비트코인 결제가 가능해지는 셈이다.
이 소식이 알려진 직후 비트코인 가격이 한때 13% 폭등해 사상 최고치인 4만4000달러(약 4932만원)를 돌파했다.
앞서 테슬라의 일론 머스크 최고경영자(CEO)는 지난 1일 소셜미디어 클럽하우스에서 “나는 비트코인 지지자”라며 “8년 전에 비트코인을 샀어야 했는데 좀 늦은 것 같다”고 했었다. 이어 “지금 시점에선 비트코인은 좋은 것이라고 생각한다”며 “전통적인 금융 투자자들에게도 널리 받아들여지기 시작한 것 같다”고 했다.
또 지난달 29일 트위터 프로필에 ‘비트코인’ 해시태그를 추가하자 당시 비트코인이 장중 최대 20% 급등했었다.

By 11:45am AEDT, it had surged above $US47,000 ($60,949) on Tuesday morning, after Elon Musk's electric vehicle company, Tesla, said that it had invested $US1.5 billion into the digital currency.
Tesla also revealed that is plans to accept bitcoin as a form of payment in the near future — the biggest vote of confidence the crypto market has received yet.
At current prices, it would cost around 0.88 bitcoins to purchase an entry-level Tesla Model 3.
However, Tesla did not reveal how many bitcoins it purchased, and at what price.
Between January and today, the price of bitcoin has fluctuated wildly (anywhere between $US29,000 and $US40,000).
Tesla's decision sparked euphoria across the broader digital currency market, with the second-largest crypto (ethereum) also jumping to a record high, above $US1,700.

But the incredible thing was that Telsa didn't even make a grand announcement about it.
Eagle-eyed investors found out about the company's bet on cryptocurrencies buried on page 106 of Tesla's annual report (it was under the obscure heading "Note 23 - Subsequent Events").
The price of bitcoin was sitting around $US39,000 on Monday evening (Australian time), just before the US Securities and Exchange Commission published Tesla's report online. So in just 12 hours, bitcoin's value has soared by around $US8,000.
