UCLA: N95 masks can be reused, and here’s how to do it LOS ANGELES — Single-use N95 respirators can be decontaminated and used again, according to research announced Thursday by UCLA scientists. N95 respirators reduce exposure to airborne infectious agents, including SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, and are one of the key pieces of personal protective equipment used by clinical workers in preventing the spread of the virus. Critical shortages of these masks have driven efforts to find new decontamination methods that can extend their use. 미국 캘리포니아대 로스앤젤레스캠퍼스(UCLA) 연구진은 이 같은 내용을 담은 논문을 이달 국제 학술지 ‘신종 감염병(Emerging Infectious Diseases)’에 발표할 예정이라고 지난달 28일(현지시각) 밝혔다. 이 연구는 미 국립알레르기감염병연구소(NAID), 방위고등연구계획국(DARPA), 국립과학재단(NSF) 등의 지원을 받았다.

연구진은 통제된 실험실에서 신종 코로나바이러스감염증(코로나19) 바이러스에 노출된 N95 마스크를 과산화수소 기체, 섭씨 영상 70도의 열, 적외선, 에탄올(알코올) 스프레이 등 4가지 방법으로 소독한 후 살균과 마스크 필터 손상 여부를 비교·관찰했다.

그 결과 과산화수소가 가장 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 과산화수소로 소독한 마스크는 소독 10분 후부터 바이러스가 검출되지 않았고, 필터 손상도 가장 적었다. 열과 자외선도 1시간 정도의 소독시간을 거치면 마찬가지로 바이러스를 제거하면서도 필터 구조를 유지했다.

연구진은 이 방법으로 2번 더 사용 가능하다고 결론지었다. 또 에탄올 스프레이는 소독 효과가 떨어지고 재사용이 힘들 정도로 필터를 손상시키는 것으로 나타나 권장하지 않는다고 했다.

연구진은 "일회용 마스크는 한번만 사용하도록 설계돼 있지만 물량이 부족할 때는 소독을 통해 최대 3번까지 사용할 수 있다"며 "이 방법을 통해 코로나19 사태로 인한 마스크 부족 문제를 완화할 수 있기를 바란다"고 했다.
