The South Korean film Parasite made Academy Award history on Sunday, February 9, 2020. The comedy-thriller broke boundaries by becoming the first film that’s not in the English language to win Best Picture. But the top prize wasn’t the only award Parasite earned that night. Director Bong Joon-ho won for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay (shared with Han Jin Won), and Best International Feature, too.

Bong accepted his awards and spoke through his translator—25-year-old filmmaker Sharon Choi—conveying his elation during each of the film’s victories. “When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart, which is, ‘The most personal is the most creative,’” he said while receiving the directing trophy. “That quote was from our great Martin Scorsese,” Bong added in English, connecting the two cultures and bringing the crowd to its feet.

In that moment, there’s no denying that the excitement for Bong and his incomparable film permeated through the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
