홍콩 우한폐렴 치료제 최초 개발…"수주내 효과 판단"
"임상시험까진 1년 정도 걸릴 것"
홍콩에서 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(우한폐렴)을 치료할 백신이 최초로 개발됐다고 사우스차이나모닝포스트(SCMP)가 28일 보도했다.
임상시험까지 모든 절차를 마무리하려면 1년 이상 소요될 전망이지만, 연구팀은 상황이 급박한 만큼 개발 속도전에 나선다는 계획이다.

SCMP에 따르면 전염병 권위자인 위안궈융 교수가 이끄는 홍콩대 연구팀은 홍콩의 첫번째 우한 폐렴 확진자에게 바이러스를 추출한 뒤 신종 코로나바이러스 백신 제조에 성공했다.
연구팀은 이전에 개발했던 인플루엔자 백신을 바탕으로 이번 백신을 생산했다며, 신종 코로나바이러스의 표면 항원 일부로 인플루엔자 백신을 변형시켰다고 설명했다.
위안궈융 교수는 “이미 백신을 생산했지만 동물시험을 하기까진 오랜 시간이 걸릴 것“이라며 사람을 대상으로 한 임상시험 절차까지 마무리하려면 적어도 1년이 더 필요할 것으로 내다봤다.

이로써 홍콩은 최초로 우한폐렴 백신을 만든 나라가 됐다고 SCMP는 평가했다.
SCMP는 특히 홍콩대 연구팀이 지난 2003년 사스(SARS·중증급성호흡기증후군)와 2012년 메르스(MERS·중동호흡기증후군)에 각각 사용됐던 두 종류 치료제를 준비했다고 소개했다. 우한폐렴은 사스, 메르스와 유사하게 코로나바이러스에 의해 발병한다.
위안궈융 교수는 "사스의 코로나바이러스와 메르스의 코로나바이러스는 신종 코로나바이러스와 같은 가족"이라며 "이제 두 종류 백신이 코로나바이러스 치료에 효과가 있는지 알아보기 위해 실험실에서 테스트할 것"이라고 설명했다.
그는 이어 "우리는 몇주 뒤면 이 치료제가 효과가 있었는지 모두에게 알릴 수 있기를 바란다"고 말했다.
우한폐렴에 맞설 백신 개발 작업은 홍콩뿐만 아니라 중국·미국·호주 등에서도 이뤄지고 있다. 앞서 중국질병통제센터는 신종 코로나바이러스 종균을 성공적으로 분리추출해 백신을 개발하는 중이라고 밝힌 바 있다.
이 밖에도 호주 피터 도허티 연구소가 이날 최초로 신종 코로나바이러스 재현에 성공하면서 바이러스 백신 개발에 도움을 줄 전망이다.
