[Strøget]

Copenhagen Architecture – Introduction

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark, the smallest country in Scandinavia. Famous architects that have worked here include Arne Jacobsen, Jorn Utzon and Henning Larsen. Recently architects such as BIG, MVRDV, Zaha Hadid, Foster + Partners and Daniel Libeskind have designed buildings in the city.

The Danish capital is very walkable, it has the longest pedestrian street in Europe – the Strøget – and the city is known for good contemporary design: furniture, lights, architecture, etc. The city is located by the sea on the east coast of Sealand, opposite Sweden. Copenhagen used to be a walled city and the embankments are still visible in Christianshavn.

If you only have one day in the capital we suggest a walking tour that takes in the major historical and contemporary buildings – the Town Hall, the Round Tower, Nyhavn, the new Concert Hall building, a short waterbus trip across to the New Opera House by Henning Larsen, then back towards the city centre via the ‘Black Diamond’ Library, ‘The Crystal’, the old Police HQ and finish at the Main Train Station. This is a convenient point to either depart the city centre by train or head east to the main shoping area, or of course Tivoli (theme park)!

If you have two days we also suggest a visit north of the city centre by train to see the Ordrupgaard Museum by Zaha Hadid and some Arne Jacobsen buildings close by, such as Bellavista and the former Texaco Garage. The well known school building by Jacobsen in Gentofte requires permission to visit.

Another option is to head south into Amager, via Islandsbrygge, taking in the new outdoor bathing areas, office blocks and apartment buildings along this quiet dock area. The twin Silo building (Gemini Housing) by Dutch architects MVRDV is in this area.

Finally, if you have three days we strongly suggest a trip up north to Louisiana Art Museum, a sumptuous building in a delightful setting on the coast, one of the most successful of 20th Century buildings in Denmark (and probably Europe).

Copenhagen Architecture Walking Tours

Copenhagen Architecture Tours can focus on the latest buildings in the capital or just historic ones. The Copenhagen Architecture Tour can be an introduction to the city’s main buildings or can be tailored to your group’s interests.

Copenhagen Architecture Walking Tours

We can advise groups re Walking Tours of Copenhagen ahead of trips about types and areas of buildings. Information can be provided on geographical areas and building types ahead of your Danish architecture tour. For example a group of architects interested in innovative Danish social housing or office buildings could be provided with tailored information allowing a suitable tour programme to be agreed prior to their visit.
