Ithmaar Development Company (IDC), the development manager for Bahrain’s $1.6bn Dilmunia project, has confirmed that construction work on the masterplanned project’s 1.7km Grand Canal will commence shortly, with a contract to be awarded for the scheme by June 2019.

Foundation and soil preparatory works have been completed for Dilmunia Grand Canal and Marina, which upon completion will be the largest man-made water body in Bahrain.
The Grand Canal has a length of 1.7km and width spanning 15-35m. It will be filled with sea water pumped in around its mid-point.
Upon completion, the water development will feature public promenades, geysers, water fountains, water walls, water cascades, boardwalks, and viewing decks.

Speaking about the project's construction progress, IDC chief executive officer, Mohammed Khalil Alsayed, said: “We are pleased to have reached another milestone in the continuing progress of Dilmunia and we are happy that the works proceeded smoothly and on schedule.
“With properties in Dilmunia now being allowed for purchase by foreign nationals and the increasing number of inhabitants in the island, its attractiveness has gained further traction.”
A 125ha development located off the coast of Muharraq, Dilmunia will comprise residential, commercial, leisure, and entertainment options.
In December 2018, Abu Dhabi-based NSCC International was awarded a $4.5m (BHD1.7m) contract by IDC for the canal’s foundations and soil preparatory works
