Auburn University using first in campus construction: SAM the brick-laying robot

AUBURN, AL (WSFA)

An innovative first in campus construction is being used on Auburn University’s campus.

On Monday, the university invited members of the media to see SAM the brick-laying robot. SAM, which is short for semi-automated mason, is a brick-laying robot that can place more than 3,000 bricks per day.

According to university officials, SAM is the first commercially available bricklaying robot for onsite masonry construction. By utilizing a conveyor belt and robotic arm, SAM removes the repetitive task of laying bricks, while masons work around it to reload bricks and mortar into the machine around the bricks once they are placed.

When asked how SAM helps, Antonio Hamilton, Superintendent with C&C Masonry Inc. said, “With SAM, having the design programmed in his system, it takes the load off the masons, foreman, also our management.

“I think quality is the number one thing we are looking for. In the construction industry that is what we strive to do on a day to day basis: provide the owner with a quality product. SAM far exceeds what we could have ever imagined for this scope of work.” Matt Hearn Senior Project Manager for Rabren General Contractor said.

Currently, SAM is being used to construct the Jay and Susie Gogue Performing Arts Center, located at the corner of South College Street and Woodfield Drive across the street from the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art.
