Royal baby: Kate Middleton may announce third child's name TODAY after CHANGE in precedent

THE UK public was left waiting a month to find out Prince Charles’s name when Queen Elizabeth gave birth to her first son in 1948, so is it possible the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge may wait weeks before announcing the name of their own new-born?

Speaking on Radio 4’s Today programme royal commentator Kate Williams said traditionally the royal family have not made quick announcements on the names of their children.

However, she went on to say the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have broken the trend.

Ms Williams said: “When Prince Charles was born we had to wait a month but it’s much quicker now so we expect to hear possibly by the end of today but definitely tomorrow.

“It was after a couple of days for both George and Charlotte.”

The Royal baby name is traditional not announced for quickly

Kensington Palace said the baby’s name would be revealed in “due course” but is expected to be confirmed in a matter of days.

The quick announcements of royal baby names only began after Prince George was born.

As well as the month-long wait for Charles’s name, when Princess Diana gave birth to Prince Harry in 1984 the public had to wait a week before his name was revealed.

With the name of Prince William and Kate’s third child expected to be announced in the next day or so, punters are scrambling to put on last-minute bets as to what the name will be.

Ms Williams added: “It will be three names and the front runners I believe are Arthur and Albert, those are the Bookies favourites, and Jack is also quite popular as well.

“I think we’ll perhaps see Phillip in there as a middle name too.”

Another royal expert, Richard Fitzwilliams, also agrees that Arthur is likely to feature in the fifth heir to the throne’s name.

He told Express.co.uk: “I think Arthur with its link to the legendary king and his Round Table, is the likely name, the legend of his court at Camelot has been appropriated by the Kennedys but it’s British.

“Albert is a tribute to the Queen’s father George VI, (Albert George) known as Bertie and also to Queen Victoria’s beloved husband.

“We see Victoria through different eyes and this was one of the great royal romances.”

The Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to a healthy boy weighing 8lbs 7oz at 11.01am inside the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington on Monday.
