India to host new training facilities for Asia with IAEA support

Nuclear professionals from across Asia will have access to new training facilities at an Indian research centre in New Delhi though extended cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the IAEA said on 24 March.
IAEA-nominated experts in advanced nuclear energy, nuclear security, radiological safety, nuclear material characterisation and applications of radioisotopes and radiation technologies will be able to use the new training facilities at India’s Global Centre for Nuclear Energy Partnership (GCNEP), which are scheduled to open in the near future. The centre will promote safe, secure and sustainable nuclear energy through global partnership, according to Sekhar Basu, chairman of India's Atomic Energy Commission. The IAEA will be able to use the facilities at GCNEP to train experts from the region and beyond in assisting building capacity.
The Indian government approved the establishment of the GCNEP in 2010, and construction began in January 2014. The centre will house five schools to conduct research into advanced nuclear energy systems, nuclear security, radiological safety, nuclear material characterisation and applications for radioisotopes and radiation technologies, with training facilities to include virtual reality laboratories and a radiation monitoring, calibration and accreditation laboratory. Basu also said India would be ready, with IAEA support, to extend its national network of more than 100 cancer care centres to serve as a regional or global network.
