   피아니스트 조성진(21)이 세계 최고 권위의 폴란드 국제 쇼팽 피아노 콩쿠르에서 한국인으로는 최초로 우승을 차지했다.


프레데릭 쇼팽 협회는 18∼20일(현지시간) 폴란드 바르샤바에서 열린 제17회 국제 쇼팽 피아노 콩쿠르 결선의 최종 심사 결과 조성진이 1위를 차지했다고 21일 오전 1시 발표했다. 조성진은 폴로네이즈 최고 연주상까지 받았다.


조성진은 1위에게 주어지는 상금 3만 유로(약 3천856만원)와 금메달, 폴로네이즈 최고 연주상 상금 3천 유로(약 385만원)를 받았으며 더불어 전세계 각지에서의 연주 기회도 얻게 된다.


폴란드 작곡가이자 피아노 연주자인 프레데릭 쇼팽을 기려 1927년 시작된 쇼팽 콩쿠르는 러시아 차이콥스키 콩쿠르, 벨기에 퀸 엘리자베스 콩쿠르와 더불어 세계 3대 음악 콩쿠르로 꼽히는 최고 권위의 대회다.


쇼팽의 고향인 폴란드의 수도 바르샤바에서 5년에 한 번씩 열린다. 16∼30세의 젊은 연주자들이 쇼팽의 곡만으로 실력을 겨룬다.


올해는 예선에 참가한 27개국, 160명 가운데 20개국, 78명이 본선에 올랐다. 이 가운데 조성진을 비롯해 3차에 걸친 경연을 통과한 8개국, 10명이 결선에서 경쟁했다.


이번에 한국인으로는 유일하게 결선에 오른 조성진은 지난 18일 쇼팽 피아노 협주곡 1번으로 가장 먼저 결선 연주를 마쳤다.


쇼팽 콩쿠르에서 한국인 연주자가 결선에 진출한 것은 2005년 임동민, 임동혁, 손열음 이후 10년 만이었다.


이 콩쿠르에서 한국인 역대 최고 성적은 임동민, 임동혁 형제의 공동 3위다. 앞서 2000년 김정원이 한국인으로는 처음으로 본선에 올랐고, 2010년 김다솔, 서형민이 본선 2차에 진출한 바 있다.


조성진은 6세에 피아노를 시작해 초등학교 6학년 때까지는 피아노와 바이올린을 병행했고, 피아니스트 신수정(서울대 음대 명예교수)과 박숙련(순천대 교수)의 지도를 받았다.


11세이던 2005년 금호영재콘서트를 통해 데뷔한 이후 2008년 국제 청소년 쇼팽 콩쿠르 최연소 우승, 2009년 하마마쓰 국제 피아노 콩쿠르 최연소 우승을 차지하며 국제적으로 주목받기 시작했다.


2011년 차이콥스키 콩쿠르 3위에 이어 지난해에는 아르투르 루빈스타인 국제 피아노 콩쿠르 3위를 차지했다.


서울시향과 수차례 협연했고, 러시아 마린스키 오케스트라, 러시아내셔널 오케스트라, 라디오프랑스 오케스트라, 베를린방송교향악단, 뮌헨필하모닉 오케스트라, 체코필하모닉 오케스트라, NHK 심포니 오케스트라 등과 협연하기도 했다.


예원학교와 서울예고를 거쳐 2012년부터 프랑스 파리 국립고등음악원에서 미셸 베로프를 사사하고 있다.


이번 콩쿠르 입상자들은 21∼23일 바르샤바 필하모닉 콘서트홀에서 갈라 콘서트를 한 뒤 내년 초까지 유럽과 아시아를 돌며 연주한다.


한국에서도 내년 2월 2일 예술의전당 콘서트홀에서 쇼팽 콩쿠르 우승자와 입상자들이 모두 참여하는 갈라 콘서트가 국내 처음으로 열린다.

On 20 October, the final-round auditions of the 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition were completed. The 17-person jury, led by Prof. Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń, awarded prizes and honorable mentions.

The auditions for the 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition began on 3 October; 78 pianists from 20 countries took part in them.


Appearing in the finals were 10 pianists from 8 countries, who performed one of Fryderyk Chopin’s piano concerti with the Warsaw Philharmonic under the direction of Jacek Kaspszyk. Nine of the participants selected the Concerto in E minor op. 11; and only one, Charles Richard-Hamelin, the Concerto in F minor op. 21.


According to the rules and regulations, pianists from all over the world born from 1985 to 1999 were permitted to apply for the Competition. In order to take part in the rivalry, they were required to send in their applications, together with a video recording containing the program from the first round, by 1 December 2014. After announcing that applications were being accepted, The Fryderyk Chopin Institute received the record number of over 450 applications from all over the world. Based on analysis of the recordings and applications sent in, the Admission Committee selected 160 pianists, who took part in public Preliminary Round in April of this year in Warsaw. From this group, the jury admitted 77 pianists to the main competition. Seven pianists – winners of the international competitions mentioned in the Rules and Regulations, as well as the prizewinners at the Polish Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition 2015 – ensured themselves participation in the October competition, bypassing the Preliminary Round. Among those taking part, the most numerous groups were from Poland (14 people) and China (13 people); beyond this, 12 pianists from Japan; 8 from South Korea; 6 from Russia; 4 from the United States; 3 each from Italy, Canada and Great Britain; 2 from the Czech Republic; and 1 representative each from Belarus, Croatia, France, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Latvia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.


The organizer of the Competition is the Fryderyk Chopin Institute. The project is included in the Accessible Culture Program of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. The Competition Patron is Bank Zachodni WBK Santander Group.

The Principal Partner is Totalizator Sportowy. The Competition Co-organizer is Channel 2 of Polish Radio.
