WTA Heads To St. Petersburg In 2016
St. Petersburg, Russia will be host to a WTA Premier event in 2016, replacing the BNP Paribas Fortis Diamond Games in Antwerp.
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia - St. Petersburg, Russia's storied second largest city, is set to host a WTA Premier tournament for the first time. The event - which will be held the week of February 8, 2016 - will replace the BNP Paribas Fortis Diamond Games in Antwerp.
The newly relocated event will be played on indoor hardcourts at the Sibur Arena and offers a total prize money of USD $750,000.
"We are excited about having the opportunity to host a WTA Premier event in St. Petersburg next year," said Alexander Medvedev, Deputy CEO of Gazprom Export, who will organize the event alongside IMG.
"We hope that the players will enjoy competing at the world-class Sibur Arena and enjoy Russian hospitality, while the fans get a chance to see some of the best women's tennis in the world."
This will be the WTA's second tournament in Russia. Moscow, which has hosted the Kremlin Cup since 1994, is the tour's last stop before the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global
