The grieving aunt of the tragic Syrian boys whose drowning triggered a global outcry has revealed the children's' mother had not wanted to make the crossing to Kos and was unable to swim.

Tima Kurdi, a sister of Abdullah Kurdi, gave a moving press conference from Vancouver, where she works as a hairdresser and had hoped to be joined by the family after sponsoring them for residency.

Ms Kurdi said her brother Abdullah, his wife Rehan and their two boys, 3-year-old Aylan and 5-year-old Galip only embarked on the perilous boat journey only after their bid to move to Canada was rejected.

Speaking at a packed press conference in the city, she said: 'His wife told me on the phone a week ago, I am so scared of the water.

'I don't know how to swim, if something happens…I don't want to go.

'But I guess they decided they wanted to do it all together.

'Those two kids – they didn't see a good life at all', she said, sobbing and clad in black.

She has now begged her brother not to return to war torn Kobane in Syria to bury his wife and two children.

‘I’m really, really scared. I’m worried about him and I’ve told him not to go back to Kobane,' said Ms Kurdi.

'But he refused. I’m really worried about his safety right now, especially after this happened and the whole world is watching.

‘I really, really want him to be safe now.’

Ms Kurdi - also known as Fatima – wiped tears from her eyes as she told how her brother had poured his heart out when they spoke on yesterday morning.

‘He said "Turkey is not our country. They were born in Kobane and that’s where I want to go to." And he says he wants to stay beside their graves, and give them some water and food.

‘To bring Galip a banana [his favourite food]. He said, ‘Who am I going to buy a banana for now? But I will still try to buy it.’

Abdullah has previously told CNN he didn’t ‘want anything else from this world.

‘I want to bury my children and sit beside them until I die.’

The heartbroken aunt says her sibling is glad that pictures of his youngest son’s body - washed up on a beach and being delicately taken by a Turkish Gendarme - are making more people aware of the plight of millions of refugees fleeing from Syria.

‘Of course it makes me sad that it’s taken this [tragedy] to make people realise what is going on,’ she said, adding: ‘Abdullah said, its ok if it has to be my kids and my wife who wake up the world, its ok. If it’s been written to happen that way, it was supposed to happen.’

Shaking with emotion as she spoke, surrounded and supported by her family - including son, Alan, and daughter Hawer – she also explained how she had given Abdullah and his family the money for their fateful crossing.

‘I said to Adbullah, “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have sent the money.” He said, “Don’t blame yourself, you did it because you told us there’s no way Canada is going to bring us in, its going to be hard.” ’

Canadian immigration authorities rejected the Kurdi's application, in part because of the family's lack of exit visas to ease their passage out of Turkey.

The government also objected to their lack of internationally recognized refugee status, the aunt told the Ottawa Citizen.

Chris Alexander, Canada's immigration minister, yesterday suspended his re-election campaign to travel to Ottawa and look into why the Canadian government rejected the request.

Recounting her conversation with Abdullah, Ms Kurdi said: ‘He said the water was so calm, crystal clear and that’s how he knew it was safe to [cross], and Aylan was so happy, so excited for that trip, and he told him, “We’re going to have fun.” Aylan asked, “Where we are going?” and he told him Europe.

‘He said 20 minutes later a big wave came in on the jet boat. He was upset with the smugglers, but they said ‘Don’t worry about it, we’ve done this plenty of times and its very safe.

‘When a bigger wave came and flipped the boat upside down, Abdullah right away caught both his kids and tried so hard with all the power he had to keep them up from the water, screaming, “Breathe, breathe, I don’t want you to die!”

‘In his left arm was Galip and he saw he was dead and he told me, “I had to let him go.”

‘Then he looked at Aylan and could see blood from his eyes, so he closed them and said, “rest in peace my son.”

‘He saw his wife floating in the water like a balloon and said he could not recognise her.

‘[Later he said] now the whole world is going to watch my story, where was the whole world before when my kids were hungry, when I didn’t have a job?’

In one of her last conversation with her nephews Ms Kurdi reportedly revealed that the boys had asked for a bicycle, according to Radio Canada International.

A total of 12 were drowned when two boats sunk in the seas which washed up the bodies of Rehan and Galip on Turkey's Bodrum peninsula on Wednesday.

Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency said eight of the 12 were children. It said four suspected people-smugglers were detained Thursday on suspicion of acting as intermediaries in the illegal trafficking.
